I seem to remember there was a thread like this before, but I can't find it, so i'm making a new one. :)
I got my internet updated to FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) the other day, BT Infinity, and it is now AWESOME.
I used to get around 2mbps download, and 0.3mbps upload, and I now get...

Normally my download speed would be near the 7MB/s mark however there seems to be a connection sync problem which is slowing it down to 5,984 Kbps. I will have to phone up BT soon and ask them why my download speed is slower than usual.
Side note: I wish there was LLU on my exchange so I could move to Be* :(

Depends on the equipment in our Exchanges and wether we're in a built up area or not.
Built up areas will get things like the 50Mbps Virgin cable service, people like me in the country side will be connected to an exchange that hasn't even been upgraded for 20Mbps yet :(

Your speed is really bad for Sky Broadband. Again if I was getting anything less than 5Mb/s download I would consult with my ISP.

It's not always the ISP, it's distance to the exchange, amount of users on the exchange, what the cabling to/from the exchange is like, what the cabling in your house is like, what your router is like etc etc.

It's because of my location, we are kind of in the countryside so it is terrible. We don't have any neighbours for about half a mile but they all get normal (10mb+) connection speeds, I know this because of my friends. Must just be our old wiring or something, for big downloads I use my T-Mobile dongle which gets about 3mb but I always use up the monthly limit for that quickly. :/

Surly you should call and inquire as to why you're getting such bad download rates anyway though.

For anyone on Virgin Media:
Went into a store a few days ago for some enquiries I had:
1) Virgin are looking into deploying 200mb in Q1 2011 as the flagship and skipping a 100mb launch altogether (They will still do a 100mb service though) and are most probably (90%) doing 100mb in Q1 2011 regardless.

We did do a while ago, they told us that they are aware of how low the speed is and nothing can be done. Like I said, can't remember the exact reason why as it was my mum that spoke to them, I seem to remember her saying something about the wiring. Is there no other alternative for us like internet that uses 3G? That is what my dongle obviously does but we get nowhere near enough data allowance to provide for all of us.

Are they going to change on how the current way broadband comes through our homes? Unless I got told false information in regards of how much coaxial cable can support up to.

I think the fibre optic cable can theoretically support up to 1Gbps (may be wrong) - not too sure on the coax but I think that's the same. However, I'm sure they'd change the coax to a better cable if need be.
Virgin currently use EuroDOCSIS 3 on their newer modems which can support 400Mbit (I think) so they can certainly do it provided the infastructure is upgraded.

Yeah they probably would change. I was just wondering as I got told that coax only supported around 100mb and wasn't too sure if that was correct etc Thanks for the reply!

Currently, the best (experimental) optical fibre speeds are 100Gbps. 40Gbps is non-experimantal and been out a few years, but the majority of backbone level fibre out there is running at 10Gbps.
DOCSIS 3 is theoretically capable of around 300Mbps and EuroDOCSIS 3 is theoretically capable of around 400Mbps. Not sure which Virgin use.

Yes, 200mb is FTTH iirc.

Not 100% sure what the excitement is over 50Mbp/s broadband... I can browse and download perfectly fine with 8MB broadband.
Downloading stuff innit.

Alot of people download movies, which can range into many GBs. Games would be a pain to download aswell if you have a slow speed.

Here's how it works
If you get capped:
20MB goes down to 5MB
10MB goes down to 2.5MB
You are not being capped.

If you're on 50 and it's that, either your wireless is being leeched or you're having technical faults. It should never drop below 45mbit.

That doesn't sound right, if they wanted to mess with the fibre they'd be going down into the sewers. Did you get a letter or something?

I think my mum did saying they were doing some maintenance, then like the diggers came, and then that day some man knocked on the door and said we couldn't use the water. So we had to get like bottled water to make brews and stuff. :{
They've done it before, about 5 months ago they were digging on the grass and cut our wires, so we didn't have TV for a few days. I live right near one of those box things with all the wires in.

So does everyone on VM's cable service. We had cut water a few times but i'm p. certain the fibre wouldn't be cut, it's hilariously expensive to replace. Give VM a ring and see what's up.

You will need to register on their site before you do the speedtest if you want a username to appear.

not that good of a speed test, balanced are the best.
And I would assume your schools connection costs considerably more than 70 bucks a month. (Thousands maybe?)
Mine is a home connection, I don't see how you can compare.

If you home connection is faster, I would have thought it be logical to show that rather than the slower.

I don't have any speedtest server close to me, I think I used to but now the closest one is in the states, so I can't use speedtest, but here are my speeds from a speed test webpage from my ISP:

The potential problem with that is it may just be testing your ISPs internal network, and not external connectivity.

Exactly what I thought too, but I have several friends with a different ISP who've confirmed the test is compliant with their internet packages, and I've asked and seen test results of both the above and speedtest from friends in other areas of Canada where they can use Speedtest better than I (edit: On my speedtest image in the bottom right it says Oolkla, and in the bottom right of my ISP's test it says Oolkla as well, possible a similar test).
I can sometimes get 70mbps or close to it on a speedtest, but it depends on what time of day I try the test at, I think. I do know I'm getting the correct speed because I managed to download from rapidshare at around 8-9 megabytes a second, which is of-course approximately 70 megabits a second and that's my plan!
edit: last night I was in the 40mbps down range at speedtest and now:

That upload isn't great but the download is as it should be apparently. I'm also told by my ISP and a few people that apparently after you install the setup in a household, you might have to wait hours to a week for the speed to "correct itself" (this sounds like a lot of crap to me, but maybe it's true -shrugs).

The more I look at this, the more annoyed I get knowing that some of my neighbours can get fibre optic (which my friend is on and gets a ~30mb download :@).
