View Full Version : Why is alcohol used as an excuse?

Richie

Or partitaly an excuse. It really pisses me off. I was at a point in my life where I drank excessive alcohol, I thought it was "cool" but that's besides the point, after two litres of vodka I was so drunk I could barely stand but the next day I could still remember vaguely what I did. If I can remember what I did after 2 litres of vodka why can't others after a few pints? Oh and I'm not trying to act hard and cool for drinking two litres of vodka, it was stupid and childish of me. For three days after that night, I was vomiting constantly, puking up my guts (literally) and I didn't realise people used that much alcohol to OD.

So as well as a discussion I hope what I've shared makes people think twice about drinking tones of alcohol. It really isn't a nice feeling, vomiting blood for three days, scaring my family to death and still feeling slightly drunk two days after because the alcohol was still in my blood stream, I'm surprised I wasn't hospitalized and pumped.

The question that sums up the thread:

Why does people feel they can use being drunk as an excuse? I'm not sure if its different per person but for me no matter how much I drink I can remember vaguely what I did.

Serious replies please,
Rich.

Just because you remembered doesnt mean you meant to do it.

But i get what you mean, ive never been drunk enough to do something TOTALLY STUPIDLY STUPID. Like, ive been suggestable and allowed things to happen (like letting someone smash my phone on the floor at full force (darn me bragging and saying its indestructible), but it being a nokia still works like a dream (guess i proved my point) ;D). And i definitely dont remember a few things that happen when drunk, but like when reminded i can totally remember them so mehhh. I dont get how people can do like insanely crazy and stupid things, but hey everyones different i guess

Oh believe me I didn't remember everything that night but at the same time when I'm drunk, whether it's a few pints or to a point where I can't actually walk. I can control myself mentally. If someone as dumb and idiotic as myself can do it, so can everyone else so it shouldn't be an excuse. Oh and what would we do without the good oul nokias? ;)

The only person I know who does this blames their stupidity on alcohol, but blames themselves for drinking too much.

That doesn't mean they dont keep doing it, though!

Because alcohol is a drug and it changes the way your mind thinks. People do things they wouldn't do whilst sober, so it's a pretty good excuse :P

Although, I think it depends on the situations. Most the silly things I do whilst drunk are from misunderstandings. Like last night, I got a little pissed off. Me and a friend were playing pool, I paid for the last game and there was a pound on the pool table (we were using the pool table, we put the deposit down for it), so I put the pound in thinking it was ours and this guy had a big go at me because he put it on the table so he could play next. I told him I was sorry and that I would pay him it back when I get a drink (I only had a note) and he wouldn't accept my apology or pound. He shouldn't have put the pound down without telling us imo. But then again, that would happen whilst sober too lol.

Yeah this, it builds up your confidence.

Plus the fact you're doing something that you wouldn't usually do will make it even more fun :D

Some people have different experiences of alcohol - I find that I can pretty much remember everything even if I'm completely wasted, some people just can't. It doesn't mean they're lying or whatever... but using it as an excuse it kinda pathetic, of course it lowers your inhibitions and stuff, but it's not a 'get out of jail free' card as people seem to use it. If you think you're going to do something stupid that night... DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH. I've done a few things I regret whilst drunk, but I don't blame that on the alcohol - it's still me who did them ;l

all i'm going to say is, i can come across completely sober to other people and i still won't remember things. even after a couple of pints, i'm not drunk but the next day i can't remember everything. my memory is ******* awful usually, but when i'm drunk it's even worse!

but i've never done anything ridiculously stupid... there is always time though.

More and more often I find myself forgetting myself almost entire evenings. When I used to get drunk I used to remember it all but since about October I'm nothing short of useless, and it's really quite depressing waking up with no idea what's gone on.

Just two weeks back I was at a party and got a number of Facebook adds the next day, I didn't realise they were even at the party and apparently I'd sat with them for 30 mins and hosted a drinking game lol. I've also got on buses and had people "know me" but I've 0 recollection of meeting them (fairly embarrassing). There's also things such as asking out my ex but I don't remember doing this :(

2 Litres of Vodka is an almost unimaginable amount of alcohol though, it seems like you were very lucky not to have ended up in hospital. I think it's fair enough to blame alcohol as long as you blame yourself for drinking it :)

I think you are 100% right. Lets just cut to the chase! If cola got you drunk people would be drinking it to get drunk not just for thirst but people drink alcohol because it gets them drunk and relaxes them. When you think about it on a normal day if you feel thirsty you wouldn't go to your fridge and be like Oh I'm thirsty lets have some vodka it's more like oh I'm thirsty lets have some juice ect. I also find it disgusting that the amount of young people that drink alcohol under age, They act all hard.. It doesn't make them any better than someone who doesn't? Whats the point in getting drunk ?? A lot of people say it's because it's a good laugh for them and their mates well tbh.. It's another way of saying that your no fun and you need alcohol to help you. It's pathetic!

I pretty much get gutted Thursday, Friday/Saturday (I usually try to limit it to 2 nights a week). I can pretty much remember everything I do, although I do need to be reminded of stuff the next day, but it usually comes back to me. I'm usually a pretty good drunk, my mind is pretty loose but I don't get violent or mean. I have had nights that I've gotten so wasted that I've blacked out, thrown-up in my sleep, thrown up in the bar, pissed in peoples closets (nobody ever found out it was me) and hooked-up with and brought home absolute MONGS. I learn from my mistakes so I don't drink on an empty stomach, I limit my tequila intake (makes me go NUTS) and I am off vodka for a while ever since my night I drank the 40.. oops

I don't blame my behavior on the alcohol, I know how alcohol effects me and if I didn't want to act the way I do when I'm drunk.. I wouldn't drink so for somebody to blame their behavior on alcohol time after time isn't right, if you can't handle it.. DON'T DRINK IT

An excuse for what? Forgetting things?

It effects people differently, I my self can remember some stuff but not everything.
There was this one time that I was out at a pub with friends and I remember kissing this girl but I never rememberd her drawing a heart on my hand. I woke up the next morning wondering where the hell it had come from and who did it! Found out two days later lol.

But if youre on about using alcohol as an excuse for cheating or something then its a really lame excuse everybody at that moment in time knows what they are doing, they may not remember it the next day but they know. So in that sense of it being a **** excuse, yes it is.

not everyone suffers from memory loss..... it doesnt matter how drunk ive been ive always remembered everything ive done with the exception of 2 occassions. Once when i was 17 and was my second time drunk where i actually just pretty much fell asleep in the corner of a club, and the second time was only last weekend and im 19 now. Every other time ive remembered everything so it just depends really. Some people get it some people dont :I the only reason why i think i have patchy memory for that night is because i only had a tiny little thing to eat the same day for lunch and thats it, so nothing to soak up the alcohol. it really just depends on the type of person you are and how much the alcohol effects you

I rarely get very drunk but all of the four occasions where I've been incredibly drunk I struggle to remember things. I'm generally ok when people remind me of things I've done, but when it comes to people I've met and especially things I've said I just can't remember anything.

And ok the main thing I do when I drink is DANCE and I blame that on the a-a-a-alcohol ok.

A kid at my school in 6th form died from alcohol poisoning after 2 litres of Vodka.

Anyway, yeah it's because it changes how you think.

You answered your own question there matey. We are all different. We all respond differently to alcohol than each other. Some remember, some don't. Some do stupid stuff my accident, some intend to. Everyone is different.

I've been in hospital through drink once before, and I was absolutely off it - couldn't remember a thing after drinking a high amount alcohol in one go. I went there again on saturday (same state, no need for hospital as family took care of me) and I never want to do it again. It was dreadful - the hangover and the sick. In hospital, they sober you up and you have no hangover, but at home you sober yourself up and feel ****!

In my experience, I would say when you drink, you do stuff that you want to do when you're sober, but just don't because lack of confidence/its embarassing.
e.g. There was a girl I kinda liked, that I ended up kissing and what not after a half bottle of whiskey, so I used that as an excuse, that I just wouldn't have if sober, simply because I knew I would get the piss taken out of me for such a long time, and I still am lol. I mean, she's quite pretty and has a good body and what not, but it's just the fact she's incredibly annoying and just really childish, that gets everyone taking the piss.
Although on the other hand, I've watched Jeremy Kyle a couple of times, and I've seen them using drink as an excuse for beating up their wives/girlfriends, and I just think that's ********.

If you drink you are knowingly taking a risk of becoming drunk and thus loose control over your actions.. personal resposiblity.

Yeah I only drink alcohol when I want to get drunk, I don't enjoy the taste that much so I'll only drink it for the benefits of being pissed - when I'm with other people or at parties, not a lone drunk :l

I have done a couple of silly things when drunk but not like ridiculous, it was mainly just me being more clumsy that usual.

I think it depends on a lot. For instance, food intake, your mood, the crowd your with, what you WANT and what you're drinking.

A lot of people avoid vodka at all costs because you get the vodka anger as i've heard it called, basically it makes you unnessessarily grumpy. I've felt it before and I've seen it... not in teens in adults like family members/friends?

Also, I would bet my wage packet the "2ltr vodka" you drank wasn't what hit you. Alcohol takes an hour to take affect. You could force a bottle of vodka down in 30 minutes, piss three times and throw most of it up. Be effected by about a quarter of it.

We've all done stupid stuff while drunk. You're lying if you say otherwise, or you've just not been properly drunk. And hell yeah, memory loss is a problem. If i don't get the "OH YOU DONE THIZZZZZ..." phone call or chat i'll lose they memories. When reminded i'll remember it all, or at least a little snippet ;).

When I first started getting drunk (14/15 maybe), I would get drunk to the point that I was pretty much passed out and was sick during the night - I could never remember what happened the night before. But back then, me and my mates would just try and get any guy to get us alcohol from the shop and we'd just be like BIG BOTTLE OF VODDY PLEEEEEZ!!!!!!11

Now, I am more responsible, even though I do get soooooooooooooooo friggen drunk and at my 18th house party I pretty much passed out at 10pm (thats okay tho right lol so embarrasing) I am never sick and can handle my drink a lot better!!!!! I think you have to take the experience and learn how much you can drink, some people can't drink as much as others to become 'PREOPPPPPPPER DWWUU8NK!!!' but some just may be faking, tbh we'll never know.

how can u not tell its vodka? :l

however my friends did that to another friend with weed. Gave him a normal cigarette and said it was weed, he smoked it and was like "THATS SOME GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD WEED" and then yeh....hilarity ensued.

because sadly everyone is effected differently by alcohol and some things they do they wouldn't do if sober. However if that's the case (especially if they get violent) they should stay away from the stuff.

Everyone reacts to alcohol differently.
not everyone will remember what they did, and not everyone will be able to control themselves entirely.
One of my friends had two drinks, just two. It was their first time drinking and the way they reacted was
absolutely mental, he couldn't remember where he was nor could he recognize anybody.
He tried multiple times to start a fight with one of his best friends for no reason at all,
the next day he was rather embarrassed as he remembered the night before.
Whilst my other friend managed to drink more than anyone whom was at the party and he had no problems at all. ( besides the slight tipsyness )

It does work though. There's an association in your brain where alcohol = drunk. If you believe you are drinking alcohol, your brain will react to the symptoms you have associated with alcohol.

There was an experiment carried out a few years back (was on TV the other day), where several uni students were taken to a bar and were told they were helping show their social interactions after drinking alcohol. Out of the 12 students, only 3 were served alcohol, yet the majority showed symptoms related to that of drinking alcohol.

I wouldn't use is as an excuse, but there have been about 3 times where I have totally blacked out and I don't remember a single thing.

Just because you can vaguely remember parts of the night doesn't mean everyone can. I was smashed like that, where I remembered parts of what was going on when I went out in Coventry for my 18th a few years back. Although one night I was out in the cold after leaving a party, I'd drunk a crate of Strongbow, then went my friends house. Had another big bottle of cider and a fair amount of Rum (from what he told me) I don't remember ANYTHING at all of the night, apart from waking up in the bath.. saying 'thank you mum' and blacking out again.

Mum said I opened the door with my key, locked it and I must have put the key back in my wallet (as it was there in the morning) but when I went upstairs I was just sick everywhere, all over my clothes, bedroom floor the lot. So she had to bath me, in the middle of the night. Since then I've never been that bad, or hung around with the lad that fed me that amount of rum. As it was out of order and horrific to get to that point.

I'm not using it as an excuse, because now when I go out in town I remember everything. I still drink a lot but i know my limits, which i didn't know back when i was 18. But there has been times I think I could use it as an excuse for something bad that I did (Not that I ever did anything bad) as I remember nothing at all. Saying that it would be my fault for getting that bad in the first place. So I wouldn't expect anyone to forgive my actions, unless I was drugged or something.

:)

Alcohol should not be used as a Excuse to anything really. When you are consuming alcohol, you should know how much you can handle, therefore don't get leathered.

This is because they got a lot of pressure from their environment. So, they always pick the shortcut to like you know relax themselves. They also like to turn over to drugs so that they could relax a lil bit. That's what's happening from Lindsay Lohan
