Hey,
Is it possible to unfilter one or two words that actually have other meanings, such as a name? I'd love to post regular updates on my website in the website section but I can't because the word is filtered. Friends also call me **** so it's a nick name as well as my website :( it's really frustrating, those who abuse the word should suffer, not the person who doesn't mean harm.
Fair enough my name isn't **** it's Richard but everyone calls me ****. It's even stated in the english dictionary "A male name given, form of Richard". I understand why it's filtered but I don't find it fair on the people who use it in the same context as I'm using it.
Willy is unfiltered so I don't see why **** should, both of them are names stated in the English dictionary.
That was a mouthful *breaths*

I call the two Richards i know irl ****, because it's supposedly short for Richard.
You are all willyheads!!!! I suppose it's like saying ******* somebody instead of having sex with somebody. It's just considered crude.

most words that are filtered are words that can be used to insult someone. Unfiltering **** would cause people to call people ***** and they aren't gonna unfilter it just so people can call richie ****

You're allowed to avoid the filter in cases such as this, I've enquired before about dual meaning words.

I'm sure if your name was D!ck (I know mine isn't but D!ck is an actual name) you'd be pissed. For example, if stephen was a slang term for something sexual and they filtered your name, would you be pissed?
What if stephen was another slang term for a sexual reference that started tomorrow? would you filter it or just infract them users abusing it because I know for a fact you'd infract that user rather than filtering the name.
I'm sorry but it pisses me off how you can filter someones name, ******* ban the users abusing it, you have to filter a name because of childish idiots. It makes no sense.

No but that's besides the point, some people are actually called D!ck and I know if I registered to a forum and my birth name was D!ck. I'd be pissed that you have filtered my name because it's deemed "rude". How can someones name be deemed rude? it's disgraceful and I'm being proper serious. I'm actually really pissed with this.

Well they'd get the point after the first few infractions? people should be able to use proper English words from the English dictionary (once it's in the correct context ofc) without it being filter.

This doesn't need to be changed. I think it will only encourage people to swear because they know they can, sure teens are going to swear but it's so so ugly to read, even when it's starred out.

Let's be honest, the name "Stephen" is not going to become a swear word :P
We can't just unfilter a word just because it is your nickname Richie. I understand your frustration but it would be completely abused and the word **** is used more in an obscene way than as a sensible way i.e. a name.

but if habbo did that - why can't habbox? seeing as it is an 'official fansite'. habbox's excuse for most things is because it's the 'habbo way', or how it should be done according to habbo etc.
seems a little like double standards - you use it to back up changes you want, but won't use it to back up changes the forum want.

It's been discussed lots before, but I think one of the main reasons is that on Habbo the text isn't viewable for too long before it goes off the screen, wheras on Habbox the words stay in that thread forever, and to some people it can just be off putting, can create a negative atmousphere and will encourage more rulebreaking with people using them as insults etc. It's basically that it's more permanent, and that certain users here I'm sure would abuse it. It's been the way it is for a long time, and I don't think it's done much harm and works quite well, it's not a huge issue- there really isn't much need for swearing to take place in the first place.

Not sure why it's still filtered (dick). The excuse "it will encourage people to swear" has been used far too often yet there is never ever "proper" evidence of it ever happening. Besides, using dick as a swear word is so 1990s and middle class it'll make the user look stupid.
In short, it's an outdated "swear word" and wouldn't cause any harm.

So what are the reasons behind dick being filtered? It's interesting to see how much paranoia is circling an incredibly lame "offensive" word. There's a rule for rudeness so if it is used in a rude context it can be dealt with like that. I'm so use to hearing "Wayne Rooney is a dick head" that it doesn't really come off as obscenely rude, unlike other words that only Frankie Boyle can muster on TV. If people want to be rude they can use so many ways to offend someone, like tart, ho, shlag, deck that and they'll be met with the rule book. Is it really that vulgar that it should be filtered, and is it actually used on the forum in rude context? Only time I've ever seen it used is to describe someone on TV in a jokingly rude manner or to say "Tom, Dick and Harry."
It's also interesting that "***" is filtered, yet "ho" is the word usually associated with prostitutes. Filter fail, mayhaps? :P Ho with an e is a garden tool :P

I think it would encourage people to be more inappropriate overall which is also breaking the rules, and there just isn't really much need for most swear words to be said at all. It's also worth noting about the name thing, that the word in question in this thread is also filtered on Habbo with their filter enabled. Even with the ability to see these words, I fail to see what good would come out of it when the majority of circumstances where they are used are inappropriate/rude or just annoyingly overused when there are plenty of alternative words which could be used.

Do you have proof that the word is used in a rude context? I have yet to see people so determined to see it. The only time I've seen people use the word is to say the infamous phrase "Tom, **** and Harry". The only time it is rude is when describing someone as a **** head - which is fine when it isn't being used to dig into someone (where it breaks the behavioural rules). Most of the time it's said under your breath or in a light way. I see it all the time on TV. And Habbo is a poor example, they're a lousy company to be referencing, although I assume it's because they're a US, UK and whatever site now, so they go by what is rude to a majority and to stop people cyber-sexing.
I could call someone a tart as a joke and probably get a way with it, it's only rude when it is rude.
I agree with gomme, but i really think management is underestimating the intelligence and maturity of a lot of the members. I understand not having the option for the filter (sort of), but not allowing **** is just well....yeh.

It's not about us thinking little of members, I'm pretty sure that if swearing was allowed most users would use it appropriately however there will always be the idiots that don't and this will just make it a pain to moderate and unpleasant for others. By not allowing swearing we are not disadvantaging your experience here at HabboxForum. There is no need to swear.

Hmm, you are a bit too paranoid over the word dick to assume society will break down and crash if it was unfiltered :/ There doesn't appear to be any evidence the word will be used every moment of every day in an offensive way anyway, and if it was it would be dealt with like any other rude post (swearing or not). The filter should stay, obviously, but keeping di filtered makes me feel like I've entered a crazy dimension where every day is the 1980s/90s.

I remember when ***** was unfiltered :P The only time it was misused was to bully a member who changed their name to the word, and the obvious week of madness where people love to use an unfiltered word. After that it began to die down, and be used to describe someone who is unpleasant (and most of the time that was to describe a footballer! :P)

Niamh, it wouldn't take long for people to start using it in inappropriate ways. The predominant use of the "d" word is negatively, therefore it won't be allowed. I remember Richie arguing this with Jin a few months ago. I've said I'll sort it so richie can post links to his website however I think you're a little naive if you don't think users will start using such words offensively if we unfilter it for what (with no offence to richie) is a minor use.
Ben, I apologise if I sound abrupt but this topic comes up time & time again and it's a decision management all agree on and something that won't change, even based upon user feedback. We listen to a lot of user feedback however there are certain things where management will draw a line, where they think it is best for Habbox. The reasons for no removal of the filter or an optional language filter are stated within this thread: http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=688379

If I was too lazy to unfilter things I wouldn't edit the filter where it's justifiable, such was "wdf" and altering the way in which dick is filtered so richie can post his urls. I strongly believe that swearing all over the forum would look bad, I don't particularly want to read through posts and see lots of swearing and I'm sure there's a lot of users who agree. This is why I disagree with it, it's why the General Manager disagrees with it and it's why the Forum Manager disagres with it. Jin also raises a very good point of the filter being used for security reasons too which enhances the argument against an optional filter. Let's remember even if there was an optional filter you will still get an increase in the amount of astericks, so it'll look silly as Jin demonstrated within the other thread.
I'm not paranoid, I moderated HabboxForum for two years and I'm very aware of how a lot of users are prone to breaking rules, perhaps not in the forums you visit but there are a lot of places upon this forum where if swearing was permitted the rule breaking would be a lot worse. Yes, I've seen arguments on this forum and yes a lot of them are mature but a lot of them aren't mature. People don't tend to avoid the filter in arguments they just tend to swear (and obviously it gets filtered). People who avoid the filter tend to be swearing in a more humorous way. I don't think the word dick would be used in a heated argument but I do think it would be used a lot in spam when people get pissed off or even in a joking manner - not everyone is going to view the word in the same way and some may take offence. Therefore it makes everyone's life easier for them to just say it and it get filtered. Let's remember, there's nothing stopping you swearing (unless you are being rude), it just gets filtered. I will swear in posts occasionally and it gets filtered, I'm fine by that.

It's not my place to judge anyone mature or immature, to be honest calling a lot of members on this forum immature would be incorrect, since they would mainly be just acting their age. But then again, there are the kind of members who who convince poor naive children into making fools of themselves, but as I said.. not my place ot make these assumptions.

They unfilitered pissed/piss but if i told someone to piss off i would get told off but i can say "i'm so pissed off"
the same should apply for "D!ck" Examples:
non-offensive : I felt like such a D!ick today cause i chatted up a guy who was actually a girl. or Hey D!ck, welcome to the forum.
offensive: D!ICK HEAD!!!!! or You are such a d!ck!!!

No one has mentioned getting rid of the filter or making it optional, most of the main points are directed at the validity of the management arguments that the word is rude, when in actual fact it's quite a poor word - it's used in the media a few times though very rarely.
I'm not paranoid, I moderated HabboxForum for two years and I'm very aware of how a lot of users are prone to breaking rules, perhaps not in the forums you visit but there are a lot of places upon this forum where if swearing was permitted the rule breaking would be a lot worse. And I've used this forum for 6 years and never come across people having strong desires to use the D word offensively or in heated discussion :P You yourself have said it may be used in a joking manner, perhaps alongside already unfiltered words which are used in ruder instances than the alternative-retro word for penis. It's not offensive, it's less offensive than words that are at this moment unfiltered and rarely used. I do not see where you are getting this idea that it's the Devil's word and could bring Habbox Forum's community to its knees with bad words, when the word isn't offensive and if people do take offense they should probably transport themselves back somewhere in the past.

Has someone said that? I've not seen anyone mention it's never used to mean penis yet in this thread.

Dionne you're not allowed post here, we all know women aren't entitled to an opinion ;).
I'm not really fussed once my website is unfiltered but at the same time I can only imagine how pissed someone called d!ck would be if they signed up to the forum.

This is actually quite a good point and if we go back to basics I do not feel, personally, that the word should be filtered as it is pretty mild especially if we are more lenient in wtf, lmfao, etc. If it is abused in an inappropriate way (which is usually sexual) there is a penalty for that i.e.inappropriate remarks. If it is used in name calling then is also a penalty for that i.e. being rude to others. If penis are not filtered then I see no argument for this to be in the filter as this phrase is in common use even with the younger members. Appreciate I am in a minority here but the management do allow us to have our own opinions, luckily.
Yeh it is silly. I will just echo everyone's points here. I can equally call someone a penis head, which is an exact same insult as a d!ck head. D!ck is such a irrelevant term nowadays, that I don't know why it's even filtered.
I don't see the excuse "oh it'll take so much more fuss and moderation". You are acting like the whole forum is going to start using this word and the moderation team would go haywire. That seems a very delusional view. Most people on this forum will use it responsibly just like we use wtf, ffs or what not in a responsible way (I remember you guys denying those too :P).
@Rosie: I don't think you are in the minority here, you are in the majority of non-management people who have sense, whilst reasons for this nonsensical denial of such a word are simply silly.

You do not get harcore swearing on any unencrypted TV Channel until after the watershed at 9pm and then it is not that common. You can get hardcore swearing on encrypted channels such as Sky but only with a pin number. You do not get hardcore swearing in any media related content online or in newspapers. There is a film classification board to classify ages on films etc. etc. Need I go on? I am definitely not in favour of lifting the whole filter. That would be out of step with the rest of world in respect of written content.

Nice to see someone in your position in agreement and understanding how the forum and its members work :) There is a great deal of fear it seems when it comes to the word filter. The only excuses we get are put up alongside getting rid of the word filter in general, when in actual fact people are debating individual words in the filter, NOT the filter in general. Dick is so harmless compared to other words that are filtered (and indeed, unfiltered) and if people do abuse it in the rare instances where people are intending to be rude, they will get the usual punishment for other words like idiot, dumb arse etc. It will most likely be over used for a week or two, as with any other unfiltered words, and then it'll just sink into every day use and context mirrored in reality.

Were those posts mine? I tend to overuse the size tags to unfilter words, it's fine if it isn't used in a rude context and makes a point :) Interestingly, the fact no-one cares about the filter being avoided voids the validity of keeping it filtered :P

Avoiding the filter in a contextual manner has always been permitted in HabboxFeedback to get points across.

There's a few responses in there. The Habbox Owners have always preferred the Habbox Filter to have all words that can be used predominantly in an insulting context to be filtered. The majority of the time the word **** will be used in an insulting context (whether it be a joke or not) therefore it's not allowed. It's not about the word being mild it's about being classed as a swearword and being insulting - that's the criteria for us to disallow it. Someone said it's just like the word idiot, no - not at all. The word idiot isn't a swear word and if it is used in an insulting way it's punished.

This is so incredibly petty of you lot. Everyone knows it's an okay word to use, you're just clutching at straws to keep the word filtered due to some unknown insecurities that no-one understands but the Habbox Owners :P It is like the word idiot e.g. You're an idiot / You're a dick. The only difference is it has different meanings. It's a swear word, but so is arse, ass and it's also a taboo word like penis, vagina, oral and anal. You literally have no reason to filter it, and saying it's a "swear word" means very little when many words in today's society are swear words, the main difference is social change has made them more and more acceptable. Got anymore terrible excuses? :P
just wondering but is frickin etc allowed or would you take that as avoiding the filter?
It's slang and usually means lousy, useless and hopeless. It's only relation to the F word is by the 'ing and can be used in the same sentences to exaggerate a word or sentence. It can't be used for anything sexual - "I'm going to frick you good and proper" is incorrect :P

It comes under the same reasoning behind abbrevations. It's avoiding, but isn't a word that's considered as harsh as as the original word that's filtered. It will also look stupid to use it to swear when Hecktix has already suggested users will go straight for the F word if anger and frustration comes out, if you're blatantly using it to swear you will just get punished as usual, it's simple common sense really :P
Dictionary.com have a good definition of euphemism. Substituting a harsh word for a mild, indirect word.

It could be used in a rude way (but bollocks could too) or to insult somebody but what is better?
You stupid **** or you stupid D!ck? Whilst being called a D!ck is relatively mild although against the rules when it is filtered it could look like F or even C word which is pretty rude and a whole lot worse.

It's still in the filter as the majority of the time the word dick is used as slang for penis or as an insult. No other word that can be used as an insult in any manner is unfiltered and this is the line we will continue to follow. Well maybe it is where you come from but it isn't - it is just a slang term for penis . The terms Bollock- Head and Bollock-Brain are common around here and mean the same as D!ck Head. Just because colloquially it is considered a swear word doesn't mean it is actually defined as that and it isn't everywhere I have looked. I can't see the rules should be based on the fact that it is obviously considered to be a swear word by one region in the UK?

"You arse hole" and "you ass hole" contains two words that can be used as an insult ;) So obviously the system you have in place can allow dick as these all fall into the sex-related swears. Again, you do not appear to be making any valid points to keep the word filtered :/

No, you don't win because the MAIN USE of the d word is for an insult. You also don't win because it isn't getting unfiltered. This thread is going round in circles, the issue Richie posted about (dickbarry) has been resolved and I'm not wasting my time arguing with users about something which will quite simply, not be changing.
