View Full Version : Arguments and Thread Closures

Why are threads closed when an argument happens? Just because a few people who think they're bigger than they really decide to argue doesn't mean it should be ruined for everyone else who uses that thread.
The main example of this is the WWE thread, Misawa and flipflop!! were claiming to be some professional wrestlers or script writers () and it turned into one big argument between them two, if anything you should remove their posts and tell them to cool down not close it.
Could we change this so only the people who are arguing get the punishment?

Seems quite a good idea actually, and yes ive seen this a few times before.

This was brought up before i believe and i totaly agree. A thread shouldn't be closed for everybody just because one or two people argue. At most, just don't let the culprits postin the thread.

The ones causing the problems should be punished, Is there not a vbulletin feature where you can ban a certain user from posting in a thread for a certain period of time? That might be a good solution.

Same with this (http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=693693) thread too, people started turning it into an argument about World War Two and got it closed.

That thread I believe is temporarily closed, unless they have changed it.
But I'm 50/50 on this idea!

The first one was temporarily closed because I could not take any action against one of the arguing participants and it would got out of hand if I hadn't. I have now re-opened it.
Same with this thread too, people started turning it into a debate about history and got it closed.

This was just a fest of arguing and rule breaking that was getting unacceptable and out of hand so I closed it to prevent any further arguments or rule breaking. There is nothing stopping you creating a new thread about the history of Japan if you want to.

Shock horror at who had this argument!

It was started due to a certain staff member either trolling, or having a serious lack of education.

Although it is annoying that threads get closed, they do tend up to be every single person in the thread arguing - as people naturally take sides.

Arguing is allowed to an extent, normally moderators close threads when they get personal, or anticipate that they're going to become personal.
There's cases where you can't see the entire picture too, like there's a feud between two people elsewhere and they slowly begin to return comments at eachother in a thread that if you didn't know the two members had a history with eachother you wouldn't know their remarks were going to lead into an argument or were an attempt at provoking the other party into arguing. Sometimes since comments and posts are are often removed for rudeness in an argument the thread in general doesn't seem as harsh in the aftermath as it actually was as it transpired.

I agree, if an arguments distracts from the actual topic then the argumentative posts should be removed. A thread should never be closed because of an argument unless it was created for that reason.
Aw, the Japan topic got closed. Seems flipflop likes going around and annoying people. The thread should be re-opened and the rude posts removed, as some people were actually having a valid (on topic) debate, or were trying to, at least. Plus it's a genuine topic with genuine replies, seems unfair that everything is ruined and it gets closed thanks to some fool out to cause trouble.
Inseriousity.

Yeah I agree. Posts moved to a forum where post count doesnt go up, the users involved are warned, the thread continues. :)

And nah, I was just using that Japan thread as an example because I think the user who recently signed up wouldn't be too happy to see his thread closed due to other people.
Would be nice to get some kind of 'rule' for moderators to remove the argumentative posts though I suppose. :)

Well I will check the thread and see if it can be salvaged. It was pretty bad though with about 7/8 people involved in the rule breaking. This is not normal procedure but it was an interesting thread. It certainly couldn't be done all the time.

Well I appreciate what you say but sometimes it is the only option as unless it's closed the arguements and rulebreaks just continue and we would be forever just moving posts out which just wouldn't be feasible.

As suggested I have just salvaged this thread as it was a popular one and will re-open it but it is not normal procedure I have just used my discretion on it so I hope you have saved it :P That thread will be monitored closely though so I hope those who were the cause of it being closed will respect those who wish to discuss the subject rationally and calmly.

I don't see why moderators can't just email the argumentative users or make a post telling them to calm down. When a thread is closed for an argument between two people, I find the moderator's actions more annoying than the two arguing :/

I don't see the trouble with arguing even when it becomes personal provided the rules of the forum concerning no swearing are observed - if somebody starts going personal in a debate/argument then that only shows up on them and hurts their own side/point of view. Whether its a heated debate or just an arguments between users on Spam, a lot of people on here need to grow up and learn that if they can't stand the heat then they need to get out of the kitchen.
I have to say, I remember when I was having a debate about free speech and ironically the thread was closed. :P

It's not just arguing, Gomme it is rule breaking too. Also don't you think we don't tell them? Closing a thread is always a last resort when all else fails and in the one cited there was about 6/7 people who broke the rules. In the one where two people were arguing I could not take action against the one as they were staff so to halt it I temporarily closed it as mentioned above. I don't think you are giving us enough credit here tbh.

I think the moderation balance is usually quite nice to be honest, a thread will only get closed if a moderator feels the argument will continue if it remains open and yes this does ruin the thread for other people but that is the fault of nobody but those arguing.
Most of the time a thread will be closed for a "cool down" and posts removed, however if it's one of those threads where you can tell it will continue there's no point - especially if it's dragged others in with the rule breaking.

Actually, i simply help people out & post some reply that shouldnt even matter yet, everyone takes it serious & they always turn it into 1 big arguement. Especially the stuff they have been saying, yet i'm the one getting blamed for all of this ? It shows how many rude people there are, here at Habbox.
Another thing, i'm not the one suppose to be getting punished, considering the people that started the arguements & are even still sadly posting on them right now with threats, it shows how much more poor, members of Habbox are.

With all due respect, you are the Habbox staff mener who is supposed to be representing Habbox. we didn't start that argument, your uneducated views did.
We were all PM'd - despite the fact some of us said nothing worthy of punishment (as I proved over PM).
I am not saying any of your "opposition" were right to effectively attack you, however you were in the wrong too.

If you haven't seen the graphics argument, take a look at the thread aswell :l And then he continued it over private messaging saying a lot of rude things.
I'm glad staff are more relaxed now on thread closures, it lets some decent topics survive.

In your opinion, Dom. :P Now can we get back on-topic about the actual topic of the thread which is 'closure'
now you guys have had your say. Thanks :)

Is this comment going to contribute to constructive discussion or is it going to head towards a personal-attack style derailing of this constructive thread in the same exact manner that this thread was created to complain about?
To more substantive issues: if one or two people are causing an argument, infractions, edits, bans etc. should just be issued. However if it gets to the point where the main topic of the thread has become the derailing argument and is no longer the original intent - I think it should be closed, even if its mostly one or two people with other people throwing in. This is because the thread has effectively shifted topic - if the thread is closed for destructive arguments that derailed it, you are almost always allowed to repost a thread on the original topic. This works because you refocus the discussion and separate out the off-topic or personal arguments that had forestalled further constructive discussion. Just my opinion.
