View Full Version : 9/11
Those 2 numbers are probably the most relevant in history for all the wrong reasons. It will be 10 years on Sunday since that day back in 2001 and that day will serve as a day of remembrance for me and to empathise with the families of the victims who have to go about their daily lives with a huge grey cloud looming over their heads.
The real heroes of the world.
I have written a blog entry here http://www.adamwingie.com/

A massive security operation was underway in New York and Washington D.C. today as police and the FBI hunted three suspected terrorists feared to be planning car bomb strikes on U.S. cities on the tenth anniversary of 9/11.
Thousands of anti-terror officers will be flooding the streets this weekend and radiation detecting boats are patrolling the water as America is put on heightened alert of a terror strike to coincide with Sunday's grim milestone.
Sources revealed the terror cell has been instructed by al Qaeda and could be targeting subways, tunnels and bridges around Manhattan, but other big cities, including Los Angeles and Chicago, are also on red alert.

No American would say 11/9, our months are always before the day, so that would be November 9th. I have never heard anyone say 11/9.
Anyways, 9/11 was a terrible and very sad day. I just watch the movie United 93 this morning about the plane that was headed for the capital building but the passengers on the plane fought back.. it crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. It was the saddest movie I have ever watched.
Everyone who lost friends and loved ones on 9/11 will be in my thoughts.

Yep, Americans put the month first so we have simply followed suit in the naming of "9/11".
Horrific event, probably one of the worst things we will be forced to live through in our lifetimes. I came across quite a moving article here (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/views/os-ed-leonard-pitts-090611-20110907,0,5641715.column) posted on the Orlando Sentinel website (a repeat of the column by Leonard Pitts on 11th September 2001).
Flashbulb memories are amazing things. I remember the day like it was yesterday - I was 7 years old, having a story read to us in Year 3. The teaching assistant came in and told the teacher about the attacks. I remember going home and watching the TV. All the channels had stopped regular shows and were broadcasting the news; I remember the scrolling marquee along the bottom: "America under attack". I remember news reporters running into takeaways to hide from the bilowing smoke, and I remember listening to phone calls to loved ones. Absolutely horrible.
We went to NYC in October 2002 and we visited Ground Zero. We walked around the site, noticing an omniscient cross created from metal beams, standing tall and proud in the centre. There were wooden boards with the names of those who'd lost their lives.
Those brave heroes who formed rescue teams and those who were subject to the wrath of evil will be in my thoughts this weekend.
Inseriousity.

An event that changed the world. To see the big towers just crumble is chilling.

I hate to say this but he died.
This is a day I feel sad. And angry. At the terrorists.

A terrible day and truly one of the worst in history. I take my hat off to all the brave rescue teams and men and women within them who also lost lives. And pray this never happens again.

I remember I was in kindergarten and my mother was calling her brother who was in New York at that time. I was terrified when the news was showing 'the falling man'. It was horrifying

I can't believe it has been 10 years already it's gone SO fast, it's weird to think that half the members on this forum probably wont even remember it properly because they'd of been too young. I would've been 8 and I can still remember it as if it was yesterday watching it on the news all day.

I was in Year 4 when this happened. I remember an assistant teacher getting a phone call telling her that America was under attack.
The IT Technician from my primary school set up Sky News in the computer room so we all went there to see what actually was happening.
10 years tomorrow has soon flew by.
Has anybody been watching Rise: Rebuiling Ground Zero this week?
RIP.

Great blog there, Adam. Terrible, terrible day. The world certainly changed when this happened. I don't believe the conspiracy theories and tbh most conspiracy theories are just that - theories. Wishing the USA a peaceful memorial day.

I was only 5 when this happened so nop, do not remember it, I just knew something terrible happened.
I watched the videos on youtube and saw the planes going for the towers and I just couldn't really believe someone did this, someone who could be so evil.
Just insane.
RIP to all who died and my thoughts will be with them and their families tomorrow.

yeah i was 8 years old. remember coming home to my childminders house and seeing it on tv - the look of horror on my childminders and her daughter's face is one i'll never forget. i came home in time to see footage of the south tower collpasing. i didn't really fully understand it at the time but as i got older the magnitude of its effect has been understood.

I was 4, So I do not remember it though I was talking to my mum the other day about it and she forgot to go into work because she was busy watching it on TV.
I can remember it being on every tv channel as either a scrolling newsbar or coverage, I just got home from school after the 2nd tower had collapsed. I remember going on habbo that evening as well and all the memorial/chat rooms dedicated to it. 20+ habbos in an empty room just discussing it, especially the US habbos that were online at the time with the odd one saying 'My mom's friend lost her brother' etc.
The documentaries on it are awful but I cant stop watching if theres one on.
RIP to all the lives lost...

I can remember being devastated that CBBC was cancelled because of it (I was young)
Then I realised how devastating it was, but a lot of things with it just don't see to add up which is why there are so many conspiracy theories.

10 years have flown by. I was 11.
I wrote this poem about 9/11 when I was about 15. (http://www.scribd.com/doc/64566750/September-Day)
I would have been 7 and remember it plainly.
My thoughts go out to everyone who was effected.

Why do we remember this when there have been many more devastating events in recent history? Probably to reinforce the image of a need to wage a war on terror.

Not the biggest cause of death though? 9/11 is blown out of proportion. Just look at the natural disasters around the world.

i don't think you can compare natural disasters to deliberate acts of murder. terrorism is at the opposite end of the spectrum to tsunamis/floods/earthquakes, how can you even say 9/11 is overhyped or 'blown out of proportion'? would you like to say that to the victim's families?

We call it 9/11, not 11/9 for anyone curious about that. Every year I worry about another terrorist event occurring on the date whether it's a copycat or authentic reoccurrence. I hope that wont be the case.

Would you like to say to the families of victims of any large natural disaster that their deaths were less meaningful because they weren't killed by human beings?

now where did i state that? if you'd like to read my post you'd see that i disagreed with the notion that 9/11 is overhyped - where did i say that victims of natural disasters deserve less remembrance? sounds like you're trying to put words into my mouth..

how on earth did you come to that conclusion? i am merely noting how you cannot compare two disasters of such different natures.

I would like to firstly quash the conventional nonsense about these attacks being the supposed results of longer Arab jihadists 'hating our way of life' and attacking us on this vague fantasy - the reasons for the attacks spanned from the U.S. support for Israel (http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2011/09/yasser-arafats-cruise-missiles-did-their-job-on-911-just-ask-israel.html) coupled with the U.S. having military bases on Arab soil and general western interference in the region (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDAWs32CwqM).... and i'm not justifying it before anyone plays that card, i'm simply pointing out and warning what certain actions we take can result in.

I would like to say it to the politicians who use the bogey of terrorism (which is blown out of proportion anyway) in order to scare us into supporting their foreign wars along with the destruction of our ancient civil liberties in order to 'keep us safe'. As for the conspiracy part of the topic (not directed to you but to others), there are many questions to be asked which are not being answered or covered which leads many to suspect behind the scenes dirt, which to be fair usually turns out to be true.
The event itself, tragic and horrid of course.

The build up to your conclusion strongly hinted towards deaths occurred from natural disasters are meaningless in comparison to deaths at the hand of man. More people are killed by single natural disasters, many of which die slow agonising deaths from drowning, fires, electrocution to disease and famine. I think it was this posted that made you seem appear as though you though terrorism was worse:
i don't think you can compare natural disasters to deliberate acts of murder. terrorism is at the opposite end of the spectrum to tsunamis/floods/earthquakes, how can you even say 9/11 is overhyped or 'blown out of proportion'? would you like to say that to the victim's families?
Though 9/11 was unnecessary when you consider how many innocent people were involved, it is "blown out of proportion" when you consider how many people die in natural disasters, especially when many people who who were killed in the 9/11 attacks died quickly with fewer numbers of suffering. It does hint that their deaths are meaningless when terrorism or man were not involved, when natural disasters are just as bad as they can take people by surprise just the same as terrorist attacks - though terrorism has existed for many years prior to the attacks. So I can see why people were a little confused as you do seem to suggest man has to be involved to make the deaths of thousands worthwhile and meaningful.
Plus we could create a whole debate about the number of people left homeless, killed by gun or by disease and famine, at the hands of the U.S. Government and Military, but that would drag on :P
