Some nice news:

Here’s some brilliant news for everyone who’s signed up to our fibre optic broadband: in one of our most ambitious projects ever, we’re going to be giving you all a speed boost!

If you’re currently on up to 10Mb, up to 30Mb or up to 50Mb broadband, we’ll double your speed. If you’re on up to 20Mb you’ll be tripled. And for those on Broadband 100, we’ll be boosting you up to a mighty 120Mb – a new benchmark as the UK’s fastest widely available broadband.

We want to make sure that Virgin Broadband stays the fastest in the UK, so that our customers can enjoy exciting online services like streaming HD movies and online gaming to the full.

From February 2012, our engineers will be working up and down the country, upgrading our fibre optic network area by area. It’s a massive job that will take up to 18 months to complete.

There’s no need to take any action for the time being. We’ll be in touch soon about when you can expect your area to be upgraded.

Still slightly disappointed about not getting 100MB to 200MB. I hope at least that we get 20MB upload or else i'll be pissed.

And why does this new reply box keep removing the spaces I put in between words? Is there an option to use the old one in CP?

Change the editor option in usercp. In terms of upload speed it would be nice to have more.

Shame virgin are crapWhy do you think that? I've always had excellent service with them and can't remember the last time we had any down time. When they sent us a new router and it wasn't connecting to my mum's laptop, I had a very friendly customer support fella (from England!) help me really well. Also the speeds are just as they advertise, infact a little bit more. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1700563159.png is what i'm getting and we pay for 30MB

I cant wait for 60Mb, it's gonna be sexy :>

Used to have 50mb I always got 50 down and about 4 up, was a very good connection. Then I moved houses, I hope fibre optic comes to SW London soon so I can get 120MB :P

Shame virgin are crap

Never had any major problems with them and we have been with them since the days of Cable of Wireless. Any problems we do have normally get sorted pretty quick and it's quite rare we have to contact them.

-------------------------

(Taken from Virgin's FAQ)

How are my speeds changing?

Broadband Size : S (up to 2Mb) -----> Up to 5Mb
Broadband Size : M (up to 10Mb) -----> Up to 20Mb
Broadband Size : L (up to 10Mb) -----> Up to 20Mb
Broadband Size : XL (up to 20Mb or 30Mb) -----> Up to 60Mb
Broadband Size : XXL (up to 50Mb) -----> Up to 100Mb
Broadband Size : 100 (up to 100Mb) -----> Up to 120Mb – Note these increases will start from summer 2012

Note: Upstream speeds and traffic management fair usage amounts will be increased in proportion to the increase in downstream speed.

I have also read that customers on the 100MB service will have some discounts made to their monthly bills, since the 100MB customers (50MB now) will be paying quite a bit less.

Is this just for Fibre Optic customers or is this for all? We're not fibre optic as far as I'm aware.

20Mb is pretty much the max for ADSL.

I've been really tempted to switch to Virgin for the fibre optic because where I live we only have normal broadband for BT/Sky which is really slow.

They say ALL Customers, so I imagine its for everyone, If your on ADSL, Likelihood is your on 10 - 20MN anyhow, so you will either stay on ADSL or get upgraded to Fibre.

Edit: just sent the moderator I am friendly with on the forums a message about the upgraded speeds, I shall post the reply here when he tells me.

Er no that isn't the case. It's for fibre optic/cable customers only, you can't just upgrade an ADSL customer to fibre optic just like that. They would have to make sure it's in the customers area for a start.

It's why the actual article is under "Cable" on their site. The article can be found at: https://my.virginmedia.com/customer-news/articles/speedupgrade.html

http://mattgarner.net/upload/images/1326399921.png

Plus the max like Tom said earlier is probably around 20Mb for anyone on ADSL or "National" as Virgin Media call it.

Oh, god knows then.

see if he can explain it any better :)

EDIT:

If you are unsure of if you are Cable or National, Try to get onto the National Status page, It will tell you:

It looks like you've tried to access a National page from a Cable account.

Click here to visit the Virgin Media homepage.

Looks like I am getting the upgrade, Woooo.

Further Edit:

Check your postcode HERE:

Didn't you know if you was on cable or national? You could of easily found that out or even ask your parents about it. Anyone on cable will get the upgrade! :P

That's nice for everyone on virgin, but I still sit here on my crappy 1.2mb download and 0.4 upload whilst who is literally a next door neighbour can go and go and get decent speeds.

Inseriousity.

Will the engineering work cause any downtime cos my internet keeps going off at random intervals every now and then. i think it might be my side though but don't want to rush into things I barely understand so just gonna ask the experts in this section, hey technology people :D

I know I have either 10 or 20Mb, Useless asking my mother about it, She just says, and I quote! "its internet isn't it?"

I know my area was upgraded sometime last year, but, who knows, Haha.

None of the work has started yet, If it keeps happening its probably best to phone VM.

Just a thought, if 100 is only going to 120 that must mean it'll drop price at the same time?

Aren't they wanting to get to 200MB? But instead they are going for 120MB for the time being.

Edit: Kinda read it wrong the first time round but:

Q: I'd heard that there was going to be 200Mb by the Olympics is that still happening?

A: We’re boosting the speeds our customers already get rather than introduce a new tier. While we’ve successfully tested some of the world’s fastest broadband on our network we’re focusing on giving our existing customers even more value. 120Mb will be the fastest widely available broadband in the UK.

This is presumably a response to BT's new 100Mbit FTTH package http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=33828

Virgin already did their 100Mb package but yeah they would have to keep up. It's great to see both companies offering such speeds though!

Oh nice we should be getting 60Mb then. We've had just a couple of issues with Virgin where the connection has gone down for a night or two. Their customer service is generally quite efficient though. The Internet went down last month on a Tuesday and we were told it wouldn't come back until the Friday when an engineer was sorting out the problem in the area. It was back the following evening though so I don't know what was going on.

It used to be a bit slow and temperamental but it's significantly improved since the last upgrade.

No, we must be on Fibre then. I didn't think their original cable services classed as fibre optic to be honest. Oh good, an upgrade to 20Mb. We already got upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb a couple of years back.

Cable isn't fibre.

Virgin Media brand it as such though. I don't know why they bothered to route fibre all the way to the street but didn't bother to add the extra few meters to have it going straight in to the home.

Expense.

There's no point right now, if they bring FTTC into the majority of areas, they can reliably give people speeds up to 1Gb (possibly more, ignoring the backhaul), they can always do FTTH when we're surpassing those speeds in the future I guess.

LTE will become very interesting for people when it becomes the defacto standard though. Public IPv6 addresses for all your devices with LTE microcells in businesses and homes using public cell sites, could theoretically provide 1Gb/s or more over the air.

Stephen!

Speeds are fine, I was just thinking about the pings. Most fibre connections will have a maximum of 5ms from one end of the country to the other. I guess that would depend of the state of VM's network though.
