Xbox One Announcement

On Tuesday May 21st, we’ll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment. On that day, we’ll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox LIVE and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the US or Canada.

On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we’ve been working on.

Yeah and it only got that way half way through it's lifespan. There's more focus on it being a "multi-functional" entertainment device but I have a TV and/or computer for that. I buy a console because I want to play console games. Simple as this: whichever console is more dedicated towards the gamer is the only I will be going with and at the moment it looks like Sony.

Both consoles will most likely have those exact same services. I see your point but we are now in the lifetime where people one want device that do more than one with. Hence why it's happening. I am not too bothered by adverts as they aren't taking over the screen fully. But meh whatever

I get your point but using your strange logic, and I am assuming heavily here, you should ditch your smart phone because it's not a call-people machine any more. I wish Microsoft would focus more on selling it as a console as opposed to a media centre but that doesn't mean I'm going to completely forgo getting the console.

For me I hope it has backwards compatibility and the ability to talk to people across the two Xboxs. If it has those it'll be a day one purchase for me, if not then I'll wait till my friends upgrade. I'd also like to see Xbox Gold reduced in price (or made free) and for Microsoft to introduce a service similar to PSN+ at Gold's current price point.

So I am looking forward to seeing this. Pleased it is about 6pm UK time - not 11pm like Sony's! Would love to see a console design, but I expect that will probably come at E3. I will once again buy which console I think is best - even though some have already stated they WILL buy either the PS4 or Xbox Durango - which seems ridiculous when you haven't seen the competition.

Slightly concerned at these big events ending up in June (ohithere E3 and WWDC) - bang in the middle of exams!

I'm afraid the PS4 won't satisfy that. I'm thinking you'll have to go back to the PS1 generation... Or did they play music CDs? Perhaps a SNES then :P

Personally I'm an xbox fan, but was very impressed with the PS4 initially. At the moment, I'm still likely to buy the new xbox, just more my style :) Hopefully it doesn't disappoint :)

I understand what some people say about wanting a console aimed more at the gamer.
I'll be buying the PS4. All the features that have been announced so far makes it sound like its all about the gamer, Plus ive been with Sony since the PS and i would find it hard to leave there exclusives which i find are a lot better than Xbox ones.

I won't rule out buying a new Xbox if the features sound good but i regret buying my 360. The only thing that i felt Xbox had over the PS3 was the cross chat but it looks like the PS4 will get that. The kinect was a pile of poo in my opinion not saying that PS Move was great but yea..

In the end i play a games console for games, i love the Playstation exclusives and that's probably the main reason i'll stick with Playstation, But i would like to see Microsoft impress me can't say the 360 did.

Meaning that when the console will be first released, not many game developers will have developed enough games for it straight away. Give it 2-3 months and the console will have tons of games.

Surprised they went with xbox One, what with HTC's flagship line using the "One" monicker.

The EA games were fairly lame teasers, didn't really look much different from the current consoles - which I know they can be. Interested by the partial Windows implementation too.

I was more pointing out that the PS3 could be £800, the xbox could be £200
Your friends could all get one, you get the other
PS4 may have no decent exclusives, Xbox could have 15

They announced 8 new franchises and they could have shown one instead of Call of Duty.. was hoping they wouldn't rely on that in there presentation. Started watching with an open mind but I'm now set on Ps4.

Will hold out to see what friends get I think, and the price (if a big difference - new xbox with no kinect seems a poor deal).

If you were hoping to play your vast collection of Xbox 360 games on Microsoft's latest creation, we've got a spot of bad news. Microsoft Xbox Live VP Marc Whitten confirmed to The Verge that the new Xbox One console will have no backwards compatibility whatsoever.

"No, there's not," said Whitten, when we posed the question. "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective."

E3 is within weeks, it was expected. They are showing off the new functionality and features of the Xbox One - Xbox was designed to play games from day one. Sure they can talk about it but they didn't want to show too much of the gaming until E3.

2 of my 360 friends since seeing the reveal have told me they are jumping ship to Ps4. Getting DLC a few months early isn't enough for them and stuff like NFL isn;t much use for us here in the UK. Kinect 2 is infinitely better than the original Kinect

Fifa isn't exclusive. Ultimate Team has some stuff which is exclusive

HDMI In, meaning you can for instance, plug your sky hd box into your xbox and watch tv via the xbox, thus justifying the One, it is a device for everything.

This was an event for the press, thus everything shown, was primarily for the press, everything else will be held of for the slightly more gamer oriented E3.

On the topic of no used games. Yes you can play used games, yes you do have to pay a fee, BUT only to play them off the hard drive without a disc, you can play them with the disc fine. The fee? Nobody knows, it could be a flat £5, £10 or £30, nobody knows.

I prefer the physical versions of anything (I still buy CD's) but I, personally, wouldn't be opposed to having one digital marketplace if the price points were fair (they're not at the minute, just check Games on Demand) however there's a massive market for used games and if I want to buy an old game I'll generally go for a used physical copy of the game from eBay or cex or whatever and there's no digital marketplace for that.

It takes a lot of power to do software emulation and the Xbox One nor PS4 would be able to do this with 360 & PS3 games respectively. M$ would have probably shoved a chip in it if there wasn't a Kinect bundled.

Either way looks like rumours are correct when it comes to Kinect needing to be connected. One thing I really dislike about this is that if it breaks you'd have to fork about near £100 (probably) to get a new one. That and the fee for used games are easily my biggest turns offs which will probably mean I never bother getting this.

Also I imagine the fee for used games will be at the publishers discretion above a minimum price. I wonder how much M$ will get from it...

No fee, it's practically how used games work now. You can play a game on one console and if you sell it, you can no longer play it. The new owner can play it.

I'm playing devil's advocate but to me being online should still be mandatory. Is it something like 3.5m people are still on 56k connections in the UK? So imagine how many are on really poor broadband and then how many of them have games consoles. I understand that the internet is still the future and it's good for me, for you, but not for everybody.

They mentioned nothing about their games system, no gameplay, didn't really talk about the controller or what the console can actually do in terms of gaming and that's what really pissed me off. More than half of the conference was about 'entertainment'.

I love my XBOX 360 and have done since launch day so maybe you can understand why I'm so underwhelmed by this announcement? Just because it's got XBOX in the name it does not mean I will buy it because I'm not a sheep. I will form my decisions based on facts when both PS and XBOX have been released and reviewed in their entireties.

I won't even be getting it close to release day considering GTA 5 comes out a month before and it's not backwards compatible.

It depends on the context, you might have grounds to trademark ordinary words for a particular sector like technology, however you will not be able to get a trademark on a number as obviously companies might like to number their products. That said it is conceivable that you could trademark One as a company name but you wouldn't be able to sue over its use in a product name.

No it was settled out of court which allowed Mojang to use it but surrender the rights of the trademark to Zenimax iirc.

Not that it matters, but calling it the Xbox One doesn't matter and will not cause problems with Sony or HTC who both have products ending with "One" - PS One and HTC One, respectively. The wonderful thing about corporate law is that there would only be a problem if the names made it difficult to distinguish the two. Now unless the legal teams of each company have a history of inter-breeding, I'm sure you can tell that an Xbox One is an Xbox, and a PS One is a PlayStation and an HTC One is a product of a company that bares no similarities with the previous two.

Contrary to popular belief, some law does base itself on common sense ;)

Back on topic:

It just makes me want to know what Sony will be releasing, as it's the only console I particularly have an interest in hearing about. The One is impressive, technologically, but I find it irrational to care about something that hasn't been played with yet and hasn't been properly demonstrated. As far as I see product announcements - it looks like a console and is one, but that's about it for impressiveness :P
