Hi
I've heard mixed reviews about the use of protein shakes after exercise and some people claim that they make no difference at all and that a glass of milk will do exactly the same thing.
Does anyone know if products like Maximuscle are worth the price you pay for them? Like does anyone have first hand experience or knows of research that has been carried out on whether these products work or not?
Cheers :D
I've tried a ton of different brands and genuinely do not see any difference from Maximuscle, USN etc too budget makes.
This is what i'm currently taking:
http://www.supplementcentre.com/buy.cfm/whey-protein/matrix-anabolic-protein-5kg/78/yes/76054
After a game, if I ever play a few in the day/weekend, I tend to pull a few muscles, before I've still left it and been aching like mad in the morning, but everytime, when I take USN protein shake, I never ache at all the next day... but i've never compared it to milk. I guess everyones bodies react differently

£47 seems like quite a bit... haha.
Are you positive it works?

Was there a period where you didn't use protein shakes and did you notice a difference?
Well, when I didn't use it, my muscles would ache and remained pulled for a good few days. When I did use it, my muscles were 85% the next day

I use protein shakes a lot - simply due to the faster tissue repair, making me comfortable the next day! I also seem to work harder in the gym after I have taken a protein shake, but that may well be psychological. Even if it is though, the fact my mindset changes is a benefit and worth doing imo.
Personally I use MyProtein - cheaper than Maximuscle, very strong brand and an awesome array of flavours! The Impact Whey that I use comes in;
Apple Crumble and Custard
Banoffee
Banana
Chocolate Caramel
Chocolate Coconut
Chocolate Nut
Chocolate Smooth
Cookies and Cream
Humbug
Latte
Lemon Cheesecake
Mocha
Raspberry
Rhubarb and Custard
Sticky Toffee Pudding
Strawberry Cream
Strawberry Jam Roly Poly
Summer Fruits
Toffee
Vanilla
Vanilla and Raspberry
Unflavoured
The link is here; http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein/10530943.html
If you do decide to use MyProtein, I would definitely appreciate it if you used my referral code; MP652929 :)
The company does a whole host of other products, but I only use the Impact Whey protein. I have also used their "True Whey" (their premium brand) - but only because it was on offer. Haven't found much difference performance wise between the two!
£15.09 for flavoured 1KG // £31.59 for flavoured 2.5kg // £57.69 for 5kg - recommend getting 2.5kg, decent value and you'll probably want a different flavour before finishing 5kg! Your can also save a tenner on 5KG if you don't want it flavoured (use flavouring or nesquik lol)
People are always drinking in the gym of the Active Club I work at. On Sunday, I'll get free membership thus being allowed to use the gym. For some reason I'm kinda afraid to take them even though we get them for free, I don't really know anything about them :S

For 5kg its quite cheap, the RRP is like £100. When I first started I did notice some quite big gains

i used whey protein, bananana
but if ur gay/girl u can always ask ur bf 2 shoot in ur mouth? LOL
Protein shakes are a waste of money - just eat more protein than you would normally. For instance, after my workout I eat two tins of tuna and some meat.
I took protein shakes for about a year. I stopped taking them about a year ago - and I have seen no difference since I stopped taking them.
Protein helps aid the recovery of muscles, allowing you to push more weight allowing less time to let your body rest. If you're going to take protein shakes I personally advise to go against whey protein. It makes your stomach bloat and can also make you quite gassy.
Hemp protein is what you're after. Look it up and read as much info as you can, it's worth making the switch.

Quite obvious if you can get the protein in your diet then you won't need shakes. The whole point in shakes are to give people an easy source of protein, who may be unable to really get it in their diets. For example, lots of chicken is brilliant - but people may not have the time to cook chicken on a daily basis. I, for example, despise fish - so two tins of tuna wouldn't work for me! OLbviously if you can get the amount of protein you are after in your standard diet, then that is wonderful!

Indeed it CAN make you bloated, personally I have never had any issue with the whey protein I use from MyProtein. Certain brands are better than others for that, as far as I am aware.

Cheers for that advice. If I buy from that site I will use your code, don't worry :)
So I should just buy unflavoured whey protein (or whatever) and then add in a few tablespoons of chocolate milkshake mix?

Thanks for the advice. I can't really go for a more protein-heavy diet at the moment (I don't cook for myself/I'm a lame cook) and too much fish just grosses me out haha.

Personally I buy flavoured, since I just imagine it to be best that way. However, I know people do buy the shakes and put in their own flavour and say it is great. Only danger is making it powder'y' - you can buy flavour drops from MyProtein too. You can buy samples for 99p here: http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein-sample/10529583.html (which is one 25g serving; ie. 20g ish of protein). Only 10-15 flavours are available as samples, but one of them is unflavoured so you could try it first - I actually know a few people who say unflavoured tastes really good - but I cannot vouch for that haha.

Like literally, they'd be pretty much recovered and I wouldn't feel any pulls, would just take an extra day to feel no pain at all

You'll see little to no difference if you don't combine your shakes with a healthy diet and a strong gym routine.
I recently used MyProtein to buy creatine and I saw a difference in my body just by doing an average workout routine in my bedroom. I picked up 908g of SCI-MX Banana Ultragen Whey Protein and continued doing your average workout of push ups etc and again saw a little difference. I have Crohn's disease and I wanted to make sure my body could handle creatine and whey protein because I just wasn't too sure.
Now having finished both courses without a hitch I can start combining creatine and whey protein alongside a healthy diet and a gym routine, once I get a job and get the cash to do so that is!
Give http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk (http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/) a look, they supply one of the highest rated Whey Protein Isolates (unflavored is a choice) and a lot more supplements that are cheap but effective.
With MyProtein I reckon you're paying more for a brand name..
After bodybuilding for about 6 years now i've only come to realize over the last two years how important nutrition is..
Protein Shakes are great because they are a diet supplement. They are not some miracle steroid that is going to work over night, or even a month or year. Whats great about them is:
. Relatively cheap source of protein
. Flavours
. High protein with a decent amino acid profile (ones which have added BCAA's) with low carbs/ fats.
. Fit into any diet
. Really quick to serve
I know alot of people bigger than me who don't have whey protein as a staple in their diet, at the end of the day its not vital, if you prefer eating proteins rather than drinking them then just eat some lean chicken etc.
Think of protein as a food supplement not necessarily a lone supplement with direct effects.
/thread.
Like Marketing; I also used to buy my protein shakes from MyProtein, it's a good site.
I recommend. :)

Took you four years to realise the importance of nutrition? :S
Isn't it common knowledge they are a supplement - if you want muscle gains replacing food is no good - got to add food (unless the person is already eating far too much - whether it is good or bad food).

Can you give me a recommendation as to what a good diet (and more importantly a practical diet) is for this? Is it fruit/veg heavy or what? :P
I only used weight gainer during my first 3 months and it had a pretty good effect on me, gained around 10kg (23lbs). Then I did the same for the following months and nothing happened lol. Stayed at my same weight, probably because all I ate too little. I'm pretty sure people here have more experience than me but here's my 2 cents.
Never tried whey protein or anything like that before but like everybody said, you can't just solely rely on protein shakes. It has to come together with a good diet (with carbs and proteins, cut down on unhealthy fat though) and an effective gym routine. Basically when you work out, your muscles are ripped, the proteins you take in aid in repairing them. Then you would have more muscles and less fat. If you have enough proteins in your diet, these shakes are not needed. So protein shakes are basically just supplements and a quick way to get loads of proteins in a bottle.
Best advice you'll get if you're trying to bulk up is to eat LOTS :P

Fruit and veg is obviously good, but if you want to bulk you just need to eat. Best if you can eat "good" food, like lean chicken - carbs and protein stuff are good. So yeah anything which is lean protein, nuts, apparently pretzels are good too. Just make sure you are following a balanced diet - but eat more. If you are getting the exercise in you won't become fat, but will gain muscle etc. If you can get to 50% proteins you'll be doing well, slightly less on carbs - and some fats too (just nothing like as much).

Obviously everyone is made aware of protein and macros when they start training but little is understood just how important nutrition is. Didn't really start making good cut and bulks since i expanded in my nutrition knowledge and now have come to know more about my body and the macros i should be aiming for.
I'd reccommend you get browsing on bb forum in the diet & nutrition forum if your looking to make big boy gains.

I despise things like nuts haha
At least this gives me an excuse to eat a lot of junk food (I have a ridiculous metabolism which is actually annoying when trying to bulk up)
Is it cheaper than whey?
I would say not. I have to ship hemp protein to get it here. However have a browse around, perhaps you can prove me wrong. :D
You might find it useful that it's not that uncommon for me to eat over 100g of protein after my workout. Obviously I don't reach that everytime but I'd say at least 40 after working out.
