A 3 year old boy had received implants to recover the damage to his ear that had caused deafness since birth. 3 years after birth this kid was finally able to hear again and the first thing he heard was his dad.

Stuff like this makes me super happy. I've watched one before of an older person finally being able to hear and her reaction was so amazing.

Oddly there are factions of the deaf community who've condemned these advancements as being some sort of attack on deaf people, but I can't personally understand how giving someone a better quality of life with no real infringement on anyone can be anything but a great thing. Some people just love complaining and playing victim I think :P

These videos give me a little hope in society, however; it's so damaged, it's hard to predict the future with new generations.

Hearing is something we all take for granted. Its crazy to even think of life without hearing.
On the same note, I spent a couple of ours blindfolded as part of a challenge and it is crazy hard to be, in effect, blind.
What these people must feel when they finally get the ability to hear or see, is just CRAZY.

Awww that is so sweet! We should be grateful for what we have and the medicines available to us.

Quite a while back a former (I think) eastender actress was in the paper upset because she wanted this treatment for her child and couldn't understand why people could hate her for wanting it. At the end of the day it should be about what's best for the child over anything and the ability for the child to hear if possible is going to be nothing but a good thing and a handy thing.

I quite agree; if a deaf person doesn't like the idea of it they are under no obligation to take part in any treatment, but they shouldn't hinder anyone else from doing so. These things are in my mind genuine miracles of science and should be embraced by all who wish to make use of it. In a similar vein of scientific method I saw the other day that there's been a selectively bred "virus" which kills off the impairments to certain types of cataracts and such which can then make blind people able to see, absolutely amazing stuff

I have seen a few of these, wonderful isn't it?

The next thing to look forward to will be progress in regrowing nerves for disabled/paralysed people - which is hopefully just around the corner.
