View Full Version : over-pronouncing "s"

I've had this thing for a while where I always hold the letter 's' for too long in certain words and I can't figure out if it's a lisp or what. For example, if I say the word "dance" (practically make the s sound in it) the s continues until after the end of the word so it looks like I'm saying "dansss". It's worse if I have to say a word filled with s sounds - e.g. "solicitors" has a continuous s sound throughout the entire word for me.
I don't know if this is normal as I've never particularly paid attention to how anyone says dance or similar words, but I know I definitely over pronounce with solicitors and I'm genuinely unsure how to stop it :S

i tend to over 's' as well, it's just a dialect thing though and it's never really affected me much (now i'm extremely conscious of it though, THANKS ;))
how bad is it? can you record it :O
does anyone else notice
like do people call it out because otherwise i wouldnt even bother about trying to stop it

If it's a word like "solicitors" where I have to make the s sound more than once then people usually do ask me to repeat myself and a few do pick up on it. The rest probably won't due to either not noticing or simple politeness :P

A guy at work was a sizzler and it was due to his teeth being all weird. Got them corrected with braces and now sounds normal (aside from the yorkshire accent)

I don't mean any offence by this what so ever, I'm just trying to figure out what you mean and this is the only thing I can think of but is this what you mean?:
Some of you might find this offensive (hopefully not undertaker :( )

When I was in high school I started having a stutter of some sort? It might have been because I was shy, anxious or nervous. I remember one time though I was reading from a book in English and was saying something like 'reasonably' and I could feel myself going to say 'reasonabl abl abl ably' and I had to stop myself, but I did it so much :(. I don't do it now though.
Max always pulls me up as I don't use 't' often, I'd say 'wore er' instead of 'water' and 'buh hur' instead of butter oh and the most recent was 'eigh een' instead of 'eighteen.' However, I don't think I've had that much of a problem with 's.'
Sometimes I underpronounce (is that a thing?) my letters because I'm self conscious of spitting when I talk. :P
Like P, Sp, Ch etc.
