I always think if you only have two smods then you're only down to one whenever the other one posts away (not sure how frequent this is these days) so it does make sense to have three smods so that the cover is easily there rather than messing around with acting roles etc :P Plus smods have access to posts reports whereas normal mods do not and its crucial that theyre dealt with in the speediest time possible so I can't see the harm in it really.

I guess it depends on forum activity though and the frequency of rulebreaks and stuff, in the past its varied a lot, we've been stretched to the brim with four smods and other times its been so quiet theres barely been need for two haha :P

WELL DONE PHILIP! X

Well done Phil, I know you'll do a good job. :)

The point of the role is to fill the gap while Nick is away. I can't take on Nicks role myself, so it seemed like a good idea to give Phil the chance. It's also a way for me to future proof the department should a super moderator resign.

wouldn't three permanent smods solve that problem instead of having to make acting roles whenever someone goes away?

i haven't been in the department myself but i can't see why it wouldn't be a good idea to have more than two

No because we don't need three as two people get the job done as it needs to be. I only use the acting title if someone goes away for the full 3 weeks, which isn't very often.

Anyway I don't see why some people are against the acting role. It gives people the chance to get a feel for a job that they may take on in the future, which makes it less daunting. If either of the smods go away for a long period of time again then I intend to give the other moderators the same chance and experience.

I understand the worry of having too many staff when they need to be paid, but volunteers? :P

Thanks guys for the congratulatory comments and thanks Shar for making the thread.

I understand what you're all saying about the "Acting" part of the role but when you're in the position and you understand how the department works it makes complete sense. I took up this role knowing in 3 weeks time, I'll be a normal moderator again and I am happy with that. I'm just glad to get the experience and I appreciate that I have been given the chance to experience the role when there are other such hard working people in the department.

Thanks again x
