View Full Version : driving test failures

i've failed twice now
first time i had to stop at a red light on a steep hill and the car behind was quite close so i was focusing on not rolling back and however hard i put the handbrake on it rolled back slightly and i couldn't understand why then when the traffic light turned green i went to go but it just wouldn't go and i was so confused and after about 3 attempts of going i realised i was in third gear........ i had obviously forgot to put it straight into first when stopping because i was focused on putting the handbrake on hard omg
the examiner said a car or two behind me had reversed and gone round me so i basically caused traffic to go out of their way or something :l
second time i was proper confident at the start, i did everything right, i got both questions right and i thought i was definitely going to pass that time but then he started directing me down little roads with loads of cars parked either side and i kept having to give way to oncoming traffic when there was cars on my side etc and by then my confidence wasn't as good because i hate them roads anyway even though i did fine, i came up to a mini roundabout and saw nothing was coming from my immediate right so i approached in second gear and as i was getting closer a car was coming and i knew i should have stopped and let him go first but my feet were just doing a different thing so i carried on thinking i could get round before it came or whatever and before i knew it the examiner slammed his brake on :/ i wasn't even upset that i failed that time, i was more annoyed at myself for doing such a ridiculous thing even though i knew what i was supposed to do but i just didn't stop?
anyway i'm taking another one, and i better pass because it's getting expensive
third time lucky...
have you ever taken a driving test?
if you have passed, on what attempt did you pass?
if you have failed any driving tests, why did you?
any advice for people taking their test in the future?
share your experiences :)

Haven't taken a driving test, but probably will be very soon (pretty much only thing left is a few more lessons of practice, but I feel I'm nearly ready) but I'm terrified I'll fail first time as well.
Roundabouts are my weakness too, I always think "yeah i can totally make this before that car is even near me" then i get closer to the roundabout and its like oh maybe not......... usually im fine, only slammed on the brake once and i felt pretty stupid for thinking i had a chance of making it either :P

passed second time.
First time I had 2 minor faults, and somehow when coming off a roundabout I went up a kerb. :/ awks. I must have been going too fast.
The first time I had Bay Park - which was my favourite manoeuvre, did it first time, really well, went fab. Right at the beginning of the test too. So was really happy thinking I had actually passed, then fluffed it up!!
Second time, I passed with 3 minor faults, so not too bad.
Had to Parallel Park the second attempt, my worst nightmare! I actually got in the space perfect and as I was straightening up, I hit the kerb! But, it was a little bump, nothing major, caused no issue and I was already in the space so the examiner thought I had already finished the manoeuvre. So, WIN. :L
I'm more annoyed that I had to do another one and more MONEY
I passed my Theory second time too. hahah. Oops!
Good luck when you take yours btw, put those other attempts in the past and focus on now:) x

Yeah I passed mine first time with 2 minors (both for speeding (A))
as for advice, just try to stay calm, if you start getting nervous over the smallest of things then you're more likely to make a mistake imo. Just really make it obvious to the examiner that you are constantly checking your mirrors, turn your head slightly if you have to.
Oh and its always better to be too careful than to take any risks at all, never risk thinking 'oh i can squeeze in there' because there's some examiners out there who will fail you for the smallest thing.
passed 3rd
1st time failed on a MASSIVE roundabout which i had to go thru to get back into the test centre at the end of the test (like seriously -.-) had 4 minors that time
2nd time i forgot i was doing the independent driving and went the wrong way and then the instructor had to guide me back. i was panicking a bit then and felt stupid for forgetting so got distracted from my driving and ended up in the wrong lane and failed. had 2 minors that time
passed 3rd time with 1 minor woo
-
but yh just stay calm its honestly so easy u been doing it all this time in lessons. and yes it is easy even tho i took 3 tries lol. u just have to focus and dont let the nerves get the better of u. be patient and yh u can do it
omg yh wat matt said dont take ANY risks just be patient

I passed first time with 6 minors. Just stay calm and I made it really obvious I was looking at the mirrors

Passed theory and practical first time, 2 months after my 17th birthday :)
Had 2 minors in my practical
Passed first time, didn't think it was too difficult. Just try to forget that it's your test :P stay calm!
I passed 3rd time. Silly little things let me down, forgot the first one now :( but all good now :D

I'll hopefully be doing my test very soon, but, like others have said, patience is likely to be key. At the end of the day, why risk pulling out at a junction or going when maybe you shouldn't have on a roundabout? You're only rushing your test which, really, is a set time limit... you can waste time by actually being calm, thinking and taking your time!
Good luck! :D
I remember when I took my drivers test (In Ontario it's called a G2) and I failed it the first time because she made me parallel park on the busiest street at noon hour. I had people getting out of their cars yelling at me.. It was scary and I was crying.. haha Also my instructor said I almost hit someone..
My second time, I passed with flying colours..
My Full license though I did pretty well, although after having my full license in another province and then coming back to Ontario I had to do it again for my full and my instructor freaked out because there was a car that was being dumb..
haha!
but I passed.
i took 3 driving tests, failed them all and stopped learning whilst i went to uni.
will pick it up when i have the money
I passed my theory test the first time around and then I failed my practical because I "didn't stop for long enough at the stop sign" so basically treated it like a "yield". Cba doing it again, too expensive. It's €84 here

I have taken a driving test, I passed on the fourth attempt. :(
I failed the first one because my mum entered me for it far too early on when I wasn't ready.
I failed the second one because I was so nervous and ended up in the wrong lane on a roundabout and about three cars sounded their horn at me.
I failed the third time because I got too close to a bus.
Fourth time I thought I had failed because it felt like the hardest drive ever and the examiner made me do a reverse park first thing in the test centre with all the candidates watching so I thought I'd failed and relaxed and just treated it as a normal lesson with my driving instructor but I passed, was so happy! :)
Just relax and you will pass if you're ready to pass. :)

i passed my theory test first time. i'm still a learner atm, as i have to do 12 lessons before i can actually do my test which is ridic. i've only had 5 atm and am far too poor for more lessons. they don't seem too bothered here that if you're a learner and are driving by yourself tbh :P

Pretty sure you don't need to handbrake? Just stop for a decent amount of time

I always got told to make sure you handbrake because it means you are definitely stopped and recognise that you need to stop and wait.
we all get taught different!!

That's a good point but if you stop for too long you could get a fault for progression. Remember it's gonna be slightly different in Ireland!

it costs me £137 per retake :(
i went on an intensive driving course and the car hire for the test is free for the first time and so is the fast tracking service (which is where i skip the waiting list basically and get my test up to 75% faster than regular)
it's £62 per test
£25 for the fast tracking service
£50 for car hire (i have my own car but i prefer doing the test in the 5day car)
so in total i've spent £199 on two driving tests and it'll be a total of £331 after my next one :O
i better pass lol

Each time you take the theory it's £31 (I passed first time, yay! :P )
Each time you take the practical it's £62 (not taken mine yet, still learning.)
