I disagree. I didn't go to any of those universities and got both (of two jobs) I applied for after I finished my degree.

Different universities specialise in different subjects too.

Not true.

How is that not true? There are some scummy jobs out there but somebody has to do them. If you're out there, earning your own money, nobody should be able to stick their nose up at you.

I saw Irish travellers taking the mickey out of a woman who was doing cleaning in McDonalds, not the best job in the world by a long mile, but she doesn't deserve to have people be rude to her, when I also see people sitting around drinking all day every day that are clearly on some sort of benefit and never seem to be anywhere else.

irreverent. educated people (who go to the above universities) dont end up working in McDonalds.

From what I've read, UCL has gone down a bit, but for a fair few subjects it's still a good place to study. Personally I think University of Liverpool should be up there, it's got a lot of state of the art science labs etc and has great programmes.

I knew you'd make a thread about this, I didn't go to university although I always liked the idea of York St. Johns (perhaps I just wanted to stalk Inseriousity.;)). However, my ex did go and his isn't up there, but the way he spoke about it, it seemed a really great place to go. He went to Keele as I know at least one member (if he wasn't telling me lies) goes there too. I've discussed it before about how you could probably do any dual degree you wanted as they'd make it work. I believe my ex did geology and astrophysics there, although don't hold me to that.

Although, I think university is what you make it and you can only go by your own opinion.

Inseriousity.

All depends on what happens after you graduate if it was a waste of time/money or not.

I was surprised that Warwick was left out as well though.

ye cambridge does blow every other one out of the way for maths, but even oxford say themselves on open days for maths and stuff that "warwick and imperial are better then them for maths". no idea where you get the idea that undergrad maths at warwick isn't good from though, it's clearly known as one of the good ones to go to for it in the uk

as far as i can see this list after all doesn't include just cambridge on it's own, therefore ignoring the ones just below them in league tables just because cambridge is better doesn't make much sense

Totes troll thread but heres a serious answer to knock you all down:

University is all about the life experience, the education is just a boring way of teaching you what you'd learn in industry.

So bored with my course, ready to get it over and done with but coming to the end of it, it is very much a case of "Why the hell did I just waste like 5 years of my life and end up in that much debt for... that?" so ye

Kill me, seriously. I graduate in December......... Doing a work experience placement for a year actually set me back another half year, great that ain't it. Universities just trying to fill their quotas by giving students crap information on what will happen if they do something.

That and I did take a gap year lul.

its not a troll thread. uni is not about life experience (how could it be? its nothing like real life) - if thats what you want then get a job and stop relying on the state to fund your 'independence'. im glad youre in debt, it serves you right for not doing your research before you started uni.

I'm starting to think people are going to uni just for the sake of it, at least all my friends are (and most people in my country), i have a friend who says he wants study law or engineering when he clearly doesn't even read the news and or know much about eng, and also another friend of mine who doesn't know what IT is when he said he wants to study info systems eng

Research wouldn't have prepared me for my careless spending which is the debt I'm focusing on. Student loans I couldn't care less about, I'm financially better off in that aspect than most of my friends. I only pay £1820 per year for tuition fees so thats about 4 grand less overall. Cannot wait to have a proper job though, I miss the money.

It is about life experience as for some people its the first time they've ever lived away from home and had to stand on their own two feet. The stuff I learnt at University though I could've picked up in industry but that's my degree which is very different and more practical so yeah that's possible.

Amusing though your dig about "relying on the state". I can't rely on the state even if I wanted to because my family are hard working citizens who pay tax & earn over a boundary of pay thus the only state I rely on the State of Mum & Dad. So much for that.

noob if you only pay £1820 per year for tuition fees then the state subsidizes you, so you do in fact rely on the state.
