Thinking of getting a snake

lit have no idea where to post this as there isnt rly a forum bout animals :P

but im thinking of buying either a baby corn snake or baby ball python, idk reptiles fascinate me and ive heard those are good beginner snakes.

anywho ive heard either a glass tank or snake racks/tubs are very common and size wize id prefer a snake rack cuz i have lots of tubs that im not using. but how would i heat the tub?? like i have sumthin similar to this

but yh thats my main concern as i have no idea how to heat it :S and does anyone have tips for a snake beginner? thanks

If you've never owned a snake then definitely go for a corn snake. They're extremely easy to care for and they are so adaptable to different environments. Get a decent heat, a water bath and a hiding spot, and they'll be a great pet.

I'd buy a tank rather than use a snake rack but I don't think it makes a huuuuge difference.

Snakes like corn snakes are usually very docile and aren't scary at all. I've never been bitten by one, they're unlikely to bite you.

Avoid playing with them a few days prior and after feeding though ;-)

If you want a beginner pet, it's because you haven't owned that type of animal before and so for your first try you want a relatively easy to care for snake that is unlikely to bite you

Definitely buy a tank, they're much more attractive and you can so much more with them :) Corn snakes are the best, but both are fine - it just depends on your preference. Storking's advice is very good - a water bath and a good hiding place for it are important.

Half the fun with reptiles or any tank pets is making a good habitat, so you will have fun doing that and making it happy.

Agree with what others have said about a tank. They look much nicer and I think they're somewhat healthier for reptiles (could just be pulling that from nowhere though). I think you should go for then ball python it's so cute and now I want one!

I know someone already replied to this but:

It's like if you want to get a dog but you've never had one before, it's probably not a good idea to go for a Collie or a Greyhound or something that's going to need a lot of attention as you won't know what it needs. Most first-time dog owners start with something along the labrador or poodle line. I suppose it works the same for snakes :P

I honestly would go with Corn Snakes, I know in the petstore near me, they are cheaper than the ball python and look a lot smaller. + they got some colour, that will brighten up your room.

Also consider this, is the cage your going to get them, is it small? Will you be letting it out of it to play with? Will it live much a life other than stuck in the little box? Are you actually going to interact with it, or is it going to be more of a commodity.

Thing is, you gotta think about the long term. If you truly think its what you want, then go str8 ahead.

OMG ew ew, just looked up what u feed them, and its LIVE RATS (EWWWWWWW)! those will get pricey, so r u gonna breed your own?

A corn snake won't get big enough to eat a cat.
You don't feed them live rats at all, it's really dangerous to feed live animals to snakes, the snake could get scratched up. You buy frozen (dead) mice from the pet shop and defrost one every week (or whatever feeding schedule your snake is on) and feed it that.

also, im catsitting some peoples cat for a few weeks and they have TONS of snakes and breed and sell them, heres one of their baby dumeril Boas i was handling the other day. he/shes a sweetheart and id love to take her home but they grow super big haha , deff not a beginner snake.

I know someone who got a ball python as their first snake, and she's really good, the person takes her out of the tank and takes her around to like the shops, the snake just sits in her pocket and doesn't mind it at all.
They have 3 dogs too who don't mind the snake. Only problem they've had is she escaped from the tank and they found her two weeks later.
I think I would find it icky feeding the mice even if they're frozen but if you're fine with that then go for it.

Oh yes we have a fairly big boa in college (think it's about 12ft) and it scares the crap out of me when I feed it. i've had a few narrow misses and it's nearly struck at me, it's definitely on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the docile corn snakes. :)

Do you have any exotic pets or is the snake going to be your first?
