View Full Version : Adults in Habbo

Hi, I don't know if this has ever been covered before - my searches couldn't find anything - but I wanted to have a discussion about how adults (anyone aged 18+) are seen within the Habbo community, especially after Habbo's history with the more unsavory characters of our species and the ensuing storm that followed (check out Wikipedia if you don't understand).
I'll preface by saying that, yes, I am what one would consider an adult. I won't disclose my age but I will say that I am not a teenager anymore nor am I a creepy old guy. Let me also preface that preface by saying that I did not join Habbo as an adult.
I first joined Habbo UK in early 2002 at the behest of a school friend. My Habbo was RemyZero. Feel free to look him up. I used Habbo heavily for a few years under varying personas (MST3k and Schoba, mostly). I spent a lot of time in the various public rooms, especially the Lido. I was also amongst the first users of Habbo US, which was exciting. I was a regular in many "police" rooms and help desks and was also an early Habbo Guide (I missed the eXpert program). I created fan sites, I made fun graphics, I wrote to the newsletter, and I entered competitions. However, some bad luck in the not-getting-phished department led to my Habbo getting bled dry of coins and furni. Not good times. I pretty much packed it in after that and didn't touch Habbo for a long time, other than to make sure my accounts were active or to see the progress of the technology. It's amazing how things have evolved, by the way.
Leading me to the point of this thread. I started Habbo as a teen - the intended customer, if you will. However, I'm now older. I'm a full-fledged adult. This isn't something I advertise on Habbo. In fact, I don't give my age at all (I'm nice about it). I'm back on Habbo and I enjoy the game and its atmosphere. I really enjoy being a Habbo Helper, answering calls for help and guiding along new players. I especially love seeing the creativity and ingenuity that's going into rooms these days. I don't go to "the clubs" or hang out in places I feel uncomfortable (typically where I can tell I can't relate), and I have to shoot down most friend requests.
Yes, I go to work to make money like an adult. Yes, I have my own home where I live with my wonderfully geeky girlfriend. That's kind of like an adult. My main hobbies are video games, Reddit, collecting all the cool stuff I always wanted as a kid, and just generally being a geek who never grew up. And I like visiting Habbo and interacting with the community.
How does the new Habbo generation feel about that?

I feel that is a nice story. I'm not an adult, but I have been on habbo since 2010. I do enjoy the past 4 years with new updates and habbo went through big technology/ design changes. I found habbo from a t.v commercial and decided it looked nice enough to try out. Habbo was the reason I made my first email and was the first website I used on the internet. I took some time adjusting through these new changes on habbo, but now I am used to all these new updates. I recommend being active with the habbo community because if you don't habbo is just a boring place. I met wonderful people over the years and I have grown more into habbox, habbo armies, and falling furni. I enjoy earning badges and seeing these new interactive activities habbo gives us users. I seen a decline or the extinction of role playing on habbo sadly. We have grown in clubs to new staff to the summer of 2013 music festival. Habbo has changed during the past 4 years and I do have a life btw. I really enjoy coming from a hard day just to relax and to chat with other users in the room I'm in to make some new friends and like a week later your like who is this person.
Hey!
I am in the same boat. There are many aspects of this online universe that draws people in. I think people are caught up in the mind set that this game is more than just a community for pretend but it helps bridge the gap that other social medias can't even come close.
For example, having friends from Germany, England, and Australia. They're all in your room, and you're chatting with them... It's like any other form of social media but virtually.
Yeah, I know that being an "adult" on this game is frowned upon, and that was the reason I left habbo before going to college. Coming back, and getting back into habbo I am realizing that more and more of the generation I grew up with on habbo is still around and kicking. Haha.
So I wouldn't be too worried, I think a week or two ago there was a poll out with the ages of the habbox community and the majority of members were ages 17 and up, so there's definitely the "oldies" out there, and I wouldn't let that discourage you any!

Quite a few adults actually play Habbo, I once knew a guy who was 34 and played Habbo with his kids whilst working at a Habbo school (yes, he was also a teacher irl so teaching on Habbo must have related to him)
There's really no need to be ashamed of your age on here, theres a few oldies. I'm 20 and work full time and im not embarrassed that I still use these forums regularly and Habbo occasionally.
I started as a teen but an adult now, doesn't really bother me since I feel the ages have risen over the years. I don't hide my age lmao. On hxf, and the rooms I go to such as the 18+ types all have older people anyway.

Are there really people that judge others for being 18+? As has been said, one of the great things about Habbo is the mixture of people you can engage with, whether they're the other side of the world, male/female, gay/straight, 12 or 21 - none of it really matters?
I've used Habbo since late 2004 (aged 12) and even met my now irl financée on Habbo (she worked in HxHD)! I'll admit that coming back recently I have somewhat struggled to re-integrate with people as there's very few around that I knew in the past.
Habbo is definitely a different experience when you're older. Like someone said before me, we like to help a lot more (and grief a lot less I would hope)!

I know someone who is around 20 she's met someone on Habbo and is getting married irl now which is cool so congrats to her.
Anyway; in regards to this topic you shouldn't be embarrassed everybody has an age and some people will be older than others that's just how it works it doesn't mean you can't play the site because it is pretty addictive.

I originally joined in 2001, due to being recommended by a friend, I think I lasted two weeks before I stopped going on since it was all BETA and the community was dead during the Australian time zone. So I rejoined in 2002 under a different name since my original is and was too embarrassing to use; and I basically did the same as you, Brawl! I used to hang out in Quarterback's HPD mainly, doing some Lido diving (we may have came across each other since it was such a small community!) and then made my way to newsbox owned by Karn. I had the same name on UK as I do now. Instead of US, I was amongst the first users of Habbo Australia in 2004, BETA testing and then went on to be part of the eXpert program, guide leader and once all that finished I stopped playing for a few years since there wasn't much to do. The decline of players and the separate communities now merged, it was difficult to catch up with my UK friends since I was on AU.
Only recently now, I've been active again and still find it interesting to play. It's a shame that the players I knew back then, are no longer active and I never got communicate with them out of Habbo since that was a big no-no. As others have said, the community, no matter what age are usually interesting to talk to. There's only a small amount of players who do make a big deal out of it (that you're an older player) but they're the ones who enjoy to troll other users.
Most people I speak to find it interesting that I was around back in the beginning and they ask me certain questions about what it was like back then. But in all honesty, it doesn't matter what age you play. I think as long as you have a life balance, then you're completely fine.

im 18 tomorrow does that mean i should quit?
NOT HAPPENING sorry :*
ok a bit more on topic: I believe that the age should be capped to 20 (as best they can). I think it's okay to play up to then if you've been playign a while, but signing up at age 22 or something is a bit odd.

i don't mind it just ask long as you're not using it the way it's not intended to be played
I see no problem with it, if you still enjoy playing why not play?
99% of the older community are good decent people anyway. As HxF's demographic has slowly evolved to more older members - I can see the same happening with Habbo.

i dont really care much about it lmao but i do still think there should be a limit to when you should stop
like you shouldnt be 25+ and still religiously play it all the time, personally i find that a bit strange but theres nothing stopping u so go ahead
for the person tht said about the 34 yr old with kids, is he playing because he enjoys habbo or is he playing with his kids for like "bonding" or whatever, like for fun

i don't see a problem with adults in habbo as long as they're not having strange and bizarre friendships with kids half their age. i play habbo and i'd be considered an adult but i don't tend to venture too much out of hxhd, mazes or coin shops and that's it for me

there are some adults on habbo who are more immature than the teens playing.
so long as you're a nice person I don't think it matters too much how old you are. I'm 22 but I doubt I'd be using Habbo if it weren't for the fansites

I don't imagine I'll be around much longer..i was like that for a long time too, as most of my friends had left. although, i began going to habbox about last year sometime and ended up making friends that way somehow. i just think it's a lot harder for older people to socialise when you get older, probably because little kids find it easy to just about nothing

I definitely don't feel so weird about being an adult anymore and I'm glad to know there's other people in the same boat as me.
we are the first generation of oldies but i think wat happened with us will also happen to all the current teen players
i see most ppl playing until responsibilities get too much and there is no longer time to play. weirdly i think i'll always have an interest to log in and see who is still around, wats changed etc.

it's a weird situation, because habbo hasn't been up long enough to have a previous adult fanbase, if you were 16+ 10 years ago it seems unlikely you'd want to sign up to (or atleast use regularly) the site. now that we've all been on this site for so long and signed up as a youngster there is a bit of a stigma because adults "shouldn't" use the site, regardless of how long they've used it.
i'm interested what age most of you were when you signed up, because i imagine no-one would be interested if they were over 16.

I was 15 when I registered. However, back then there was no real community or conciousness about age. All you really did was hang out in simple little rooms and have conversation, mostly with friends you actually knew in real life.

Oh no come to the habbox help desk and everyone will chat to you
When I joined Habbo as a teenager there was a room owned by Joe_Computer where adults would hangout so for as long as I played adults were welcome and it was normal to find adult players being active in the community. I haven't used Habbo properly for a long time now so I'm glad recent events and changes on the site/within the community hasn't affected this and adult members are still valued. My problem when I do log-in, and I'm sure it's the same for a lot of adults who use to play as children, is I have no idea where to hangout, lol. It seems role playing, trading, quests and room building are the focus of the site right now which never appealed to me and actual conversation/community isn't as easy to come by as it once was.

I'm 23 and I've been using Habbo since 2002. Generally I just build my rooms or try to speak and hang with people of a similar age/ mindset. Nothing against the youngers personally, I just don't have anything in common with them.
Unfortunately I don't feel I can go in 18+ rooms regularly anymore. They were ok but now appear to mostly be full of people who just lie a lot on the internet. All you get is people talking about how much weed they smoke or how much weight they lift or lads getting really creepy, pervy and cringey over females again and again and again and again. Like a few others have said, it's somewhat harder to integrate with others when you're older.. it's not like you can ask who's older so you can have a good conversation!
Maybe there should be 18+ Habbox events to let us oldies (a) celebrate being oldies and (b) to get that interaction! :D
For the record, I joined Habbo aged 13. Judging from others responses, doesn't look like anyone randomly joined at 25! It's people that joined as a teen and can't leave! :)

I don't frown upon adults using Habbo. In fact, I assume most of the people who joined Habbo 6-10 years ago are now becoming, or already are, adults. Age has nothing to do with how much you enjoy a pastime. There are activities on Habbo that appeal to any age group--designing, socializing and collecting furni. To say you can't enjoy something anymore because you've turned 18 is ridiculous. I think of Habbo as a more colourful, friendly version of other MMORPGs like WoW or Runescape which are still used by adults and which you would receive less judgment for playing as an adult. Heck, even Neopets has a large adult demographic.
I think most people assume adults on Habbo are socializing with kids 10 or 20 years their junior. News flash: many adults on Habbo socialize within their own age group. Ever been to an 18+ room? Yep, that's where you'll find most of them. It's not like they're seducing young children in dating or party rooms (though it's probably fair to say that a small minority are). We shouldn't label all adults on Habbo as losers who need "lives" or pedofiles who are preying on younger children.
Now, although I see nothing wrong with using Habbo as an adult, I think there are situations where you should draw the line. If Habbo has started to interfere with your growth into an adult (i.e. post-secondary education or work) I think it is time to log off and call it quits. Habbo used in conjunction with a healthy life is perfectly fine, but when you are an adult who hasn't established yourself in the world and who is still using Habbo for many hours a day, I think there is something wrong. However, I would say the same thing about a teenager or child who's life has been taken over by Habbo. At any age it is wrong, but as an adult it can be more destructive.
I am 20 now. I log into Habbo regularly to keep up with badges or invest in new furniture. I will log in, earn any new badges for the day and check marketplace values, and then log right off. I no longer have an attachment to the site and certainly don't have anyone I would consider a "good friend" left to talk to. There is no longer a social dimension to my time spent on Habbo, and that is just fine with me. I think there comes a time when you look at the people around you and realize how ignorant their ideas and thoughts about the world are. For me, that time came last year. It also doesn't help that the quality of service on Habbo has gone down the toilet, but that's another story altogether.

This, 18+ rooms are like a cancer! It's not just the guys, the girls who go in there bragging about sleeping with people and telling people stories that no one wants to hear and the only reason they are being listened to is because the might send some guy who listens nudes.
It's cringe worthy to think these people are 18+! Its a bit embarrassing when you're in their bragging about your Habbo relationships or Habbo boyfriend/girlfriend!

Brawl; just read the first post and I hate how you've made me realize that I am actually an adult (what society considers an adult to be to be honest haha) and still play Habbo...
Joined when I was like 10-11?, my mother's boyfriend's niece told me about it but my first Habbo Hotel was habbo.com.br because at the time I could barely speak English haha. I remember I didn't like how Brazilian people talked/typed so I mostly only played Battle Ball because I failed at Snow Storm lol. Quit soon after and in a boring summer when I was 13, from the math done just now. Honestly, didn't think it was that long ago, doesn't seem like that long ago, I remember joining habbo.com when I decided to come back because I so desperately wanted to play Battle Ball again, but then it was gone and I felt so sad and wanted to quit again but the addiction bug and the fact everything was so different maybe me stick around.
First year was to focus on my Harry Potter addiction so joined `H`ogwarts, reached Year 7 with numerous characters, etc. Got annoyed of Hogwarts and decided to try `D`urmstrang, in the summer of 2014 I believe. Met great friends there that I still talk to now, but was young, naive and honestly stupid blah blah erased those years of my life haha. January of 2012 my best Habbo friends quits, I quit a few weeks later and spend a great time focusing on real life. Summer of 2012 I was bored again so decided to come back to Habbo and I don't remember how found Habbox. Not really found it because I had an old account from the previous summer, when I had joined the site to try my luck in a competition, the type that used to exist in the main site.
I liked the forums, liked most of the people and wanted a job in the HxHD so bad because I love helping people, I'm studying International Hospitality and Tourism Management so I will basically help people and be ready to talk to them at any time, and I do love doing it. At the time HxHD applications were closed so I sticked around.
All through high school I was an active member of Habbo. My family obviously found out, never really admited it in real life but some of my closest friends new too and made some fun about it but never bothered me or anything, didn't really care. Need to point out that I kept having a normal life though, would still have lunch with my friends and go out at night, everything, but only had classes in the morning so had lots of free time haha.
Last September I moved to Scotland for university and the wifi there wouldn't allow me on the client, so had to give up and quit. Now I am finally 18 and last month I decided to join again because I wanted a reason not to study for my university exams haha. Since then I kept coming online and got two roles. I don't come online every single day and stay here every single hour like I used to anymore, no. I pop up a few times to fill my job obligations, to talk to friends, build rooms, etc, I now have twice as many friendships to handle in real life as well so not much time left lol.
This said, when I was 14 I used to have a friend on Habbo who was 11 years older than me and we joked once, twice and that was it, she was nice that's all that matters and she still pops up once in a while. Don't really care about older people as long as they are not creepy or anything. Habbo is not for 13 years older anymore, in my opinion. The gamers are getting older I know way more people who are older than me (and remember that I am 18) than younger ones. Yes the younger ones are more active but still, don't think people have a problem with it, much less in Habbox where I feel like a toddler haha.
(Oh God, was in the mood to write my biography LOL)
