In Canada they're very common.. your parents have to be pretty poor for you to qualify for a student loan. I know of people who have 1 parent who work a regular job and they don't qualify. Your parents are expected to pay over here.
I've heard this before from American family friends who have discussed the British educational system. Quite a few of my friends have gotten jobs to pay for University or as an extra income on top of a student loan. Unfortunately there's not that many jobs available or they cannot find the time tog et jobs even at part-time. Then you get some who moan constantly and expect to be spoon fed. We go to the same school so my mom figured it would be a lot cheaper to buy a house instead of paying rent for 4 people to somebody else. So the house is $2500 a month including bills.
Housing: $30000
Tuition for me and my 3 brothers: $18000
Tuition for my sister (international student): $12000
Residence for Ashley: $4500 (so she can meet people)
so this year just for schooling related expenses it's close to $65000.
that doesn't include books, food, spending money, gas, insurance..
