Whoever Can Solve This Gets + Rep

Right ok lets conduct alittle test to see if anyone can solve this. Its pritty simple and will take less than 5 minutes if you use logic. Its also been done on a film (who says watching television isnt educational :P ) so you might know how to do it from that anyway.


I have two containers;

One container holds 3 liters of water
One container holds 5 liters of water

Now i want to get exactly 4 liters of water into the 5 liter container.

You can only use the two containers and nothing else, it can also be done.

+rep to whoever posts the correct answer first.

pour a liter of water from container which holds fiver into container which holds three, bearing in mind that u mean its holding and not thats the max amount because if you mean then both containers could be empty or could have 1 liter each in.

At both posts above, how do you know its exactly 1 liter though? Bear in mind you cant use any measuring equipment.

use half of 3 litre jug for 1.5, and half of the 5 litre jug for 2.5, mix them both up and it makes 4???

How would that be accurate though? You can't say that you've got EXACTLY 1.5 liters of water?

Nope :P

Place 3 upside down in 5, fill 5, remove 3 without spilling any water, pour 5 into 3, fill 5, pour 5 into 3 until 3 fills.

Can you elaborate on that further? Because i can't see cleary whats being filled up and whats being emptied into where and what not.

Use the 5 liter container to fill the 3 liter container. You're left with 2 litres of water in the 5 liter container. So empty the 3 liter container and pour the 2 liters of water that is in the 5 liter container into the 3 litre container, so there is 2 liters in the 3 liter container. Fill up the 5 liter container and use it to fill up the 3 liter container. So then you'll have 4 liters left in the 5 liter container. Ohh, yeah!

to get the other 3 litres in the 5 litre, you have to have no water in the 5 litre container, but you already have 3 litres? :P

where he empties the 3 litre container, what does he empty it in to? :rolleyes: nothing because he uses the 5 litre container is used to fill up again after

just put 4 litres straight in to the 5litres one, god no need to complicate it!

Ohh, I thought I might be wrong because you said you can only use the containers and nothing else. I used my brain but didn't get it at first, but it's quite simple once you think of it. :P

okies so i have 3 points about this

1. Me and farmer are right, if we can count it then it works
2. You never said ther was anything in these containers:s
3. Techically if your not allowed to use a mesuring device its impossible because when u put it into another jug ur must of needed to measure it to know how much more water needed to be poured out even if you just looked to see if it was empty u still measured it

1.Wrong - Measurement by the eye will never be exactly correct.
2.Don't act silly your just nit picking now aren't we :P.
3.It will be correct, trust me


I might just tell you how to do it to prove everyone who said it cant be done right :P

make it more clear, because the way neversoft explained doesn't work if you only have 2 containers.

If you have a container full of 5 liters of water and a 3 litre container with nothing in. You just pour 3 liters you have in the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container (you'll know its 3 liters because thats how big the 3 liter container is). So you have 2 liters in the 5 liter container and 3 in the 3 liter one. Just pour out the water from the 3 liter container anywhere (on the floor, whatever) and pour the 2 liters in the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container. So there is nothing in the 5 liter container and 2 liters in the 3 liter container. Fill up the 5 liter container and fill up the rest of the 3 liter container (Again, you'll know how much to pour in because the 3 liter container is only as big as 3 liters) using the water in the 5 liter container and you're left with 3 liters of water in the 3 liter container and 4 liters in the 5 liter container. Damn thats enough explaining for now... I don't get why you think it won't work this way...?

Right im going to explain it. This puzzle is taking from the film Die Hard 3 Aka, Die Hard: with avengence.

Ok so you do it in these steps;

1. Take the 5 liter container and fill it up.
2. Empty the contents of the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container until it is full, leaving you with exactly 2 liters in the 5 liter container.
3. Empty the 3 liter container and transfer the 2 liters in the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container.
4. Fill up the 5 liter container and fill up the 3 liter container with the water from the 5 liter container until it is full
5. This leaves you with EXACTLY! 4 liters in the 5 liter container.

Because you pour 1 liter from the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container because the 3 liter container still has 2 liters of water in from when you poured the 2 liters from the 5 liter container into the 3 liter one. :eusa_wall

Fill up the 5 litre jug, then fill up the 3 litre one with the 5 litre one, tip out the 3 litre one, put the 2 litres in the 5 litre into the 3 litre, fill up the 5 litre, fill the 3 litre up, taking away 1 litre from the 5 litre, leaving you with 4 litre in the 5 litre container.

fill the 5liter thing up to 4 litter line
DUH

Pur them both together, weigh them, divide the weight by two and keep pouring water into the other container until you have half the weight of the two combined.
