The crap we call Design & Development.

There's only one word to describe this section; ****.

1. Not many people post here anymore.
2. When they do post, they post in the wrong section.
3. When they post in the wrong section, nothing happens.

I thought the whole point of sub-forums were to categorize and separate some of the threads?

Well it doesn't seem to happen.. here's an example:

This forum is meant for Website Design, right?

It's all about coding! Now don't say we have the "& Coding Related" help, because this is all either HTML, or PHP, or CSS.. don't we already have a section for that?

but! lets look at how many posts are actually put in there..

Look at the dates on those.. we still have posts from Feb. on the first page! Not used much?

Then we go to the main D&D section, half of those posts don't even belong there!

Then we go to the Free Requests forum.. shouldn't these be in the other two subforums?! About free coding and HTML help..

Here is what I propose we do.

1. Either get the moderators to step up, and do their job... or find some of the people that actually know about D&D and are active in that section.. and get them to help do it.

Because the moderators now, I don't see much really happening in this section. Things are not moved where they need to go half the time without reporting it.

Shouldn't a moderator browse his/her section and find things that are wrong? Instead of relying on us to report the posts, he/she are taking on the responsibility to do his/her job and actively do it.. not sit back and let us do it for them.

2. Get rid of these stupid sub forums, and get the D&D active again.

What subforums?

Why?

The D&D section isn't popular enough anymore to deserve all of these subforums, when they aren't used enough to categorize these.

Website Coding & Programming - This section isn't organized anymore, or used anymore hardly anyway.. this can be put in the main section with Prefix's ([PHP], [HTML], [CSS], [Javascript], etc).

Website Design & Coding Related - The same reason as above, people post here the wrong things anyway.. and it would function better with prefix(s) in the main section.

Website Design Projects - This isn't used hardly anymore, not many people do their own projects, so a section isn't needed for the little posts.

Most posts are about starting Habbo fansites anyway, so this wasn't the original intention of this section (DJ Panels, News Scripts, etc).

Ask The Coding Community - Why is this even still here? It was disbanded remember.. plus it looks pointless with the "Never".

Web Design Tutorials - Rename - It's not all about web design, hence the [PHP] over there, it should just be "Tutorials".

3. Again, get some moderators from the Design & Development section that are active and know what they are doing, and what they are talking about.

Assigning someone this section, as a trialest mod or just a mod in general is pointless.

The D&D section shouldn't rely soly on the Tech mods, as they sometimes don't know what they are doing anyway.. or have no clue about D&D.. so they stray away from moderating this section if they have to.

It would really benefit more for the D&D section to have their own moderators that don't rely on the Tech moderators.

Unless you fix that problem, we will always have this problem.

I agree with all that to be frank. We need people who are intelligent enough in web development to moderate the forums, as they are people that will generally know where to put topics that are not related.

I also thing its really stupid that threads get stickied when they are about getting free domain names. How is the process of buying/getting domains directly related to design and development, you can argue it is, but not enough for that sort of thread to get sticked.

It needs to be fixed for the people to stay, at the moment its one horrid place.

Pretty much this post, there's not really much at all to add to this, so just 1+ing this. Get some decent mods (i.e the long time D&D users that will know what to do) that don't just sit about and let everything slide.

The only problem I can see is finding people suitable enough for moderating and who have a good knowledge of D&D. Mod jobs aren't just given to any old nubbin.

4thed 5thed or sixthed? anyway, this was brought up by you about a month ago yet nothing has really been changed apart from the not so obvious removal of the coding community.

Mods need to be definitely integrated in this section.. PLEASE.

ive been a 'member' of the d+d for a while now, may not have posted but i read a lot. but when i come to posting a thread its gotten that confusing where to post that you just end up putting it in the D+D part.

PLEASE CHANGE IT


to above. im sure a lot of people wouldnt mind having the job. And the whole process of going through mod applications is having a good number to choose from. But tbh, most of the people in D+D (as in long members) wont just piss about and not do the job. ok, some are immature like that but a lot of us arent and wouldnt mind doing it

I just hope something gets done about this.

It would be nice if the section could actually vote or nominate members to be moderators, because we're the ones who know what the section is like.. and know the people that would moderate the section the best, and actually do it right.

Report posts that are in the wrong sections or whatever and they will be dealt with. I agree that there are too many sub-forums, but there hasn't been many posts reported in D+D recently by the looks of it, so they can't all be dealt with

its because its the mods job, not ours to deal with them. there are way too many wrong posts

It's not our jobs to do it, we're not the moderators.. but if we do notice something out of the blue, we should report it.

It's not our job to go through the section and clean it up, look at it! Almost every thread is out of place.

That's not our job to report an entire ******* section, that's the moderator of that section's job to go through there and sort it.

If it was our job to report every tiny little thing that was wrong, then they fix it.. we would be the moderators.

I nominate Dentafrice for a mod job :L

You made some good points, we will have to make a decision between basically diverting all the threads into those subforums or just getting rid of them, though some (like Coding Community) will go regardless.

Putting the threads in the subforums isn't going to solve it.

The subforums were created during a time that the D&D section was really thriving, and it was getting so bad, we needed to find some way to separate them.

It's not that way anymore, it's not that popular. It's like a car, when your engine revs up, you need to switch gears.. but as you slow down.. you don't stay in 4th gear, you downshift because staying in 4th gear is wasted power.

Fair enough, that probably suggests what the solution will be then. But there's no problem with looking at the whole picture, especially as this will probably be done on Sunday :D

Honestly we're having difficulty locating quality moderators, lAscend did mention the possibility of reverting to the old three forum per mod system where mods were able to specialize a little more.

It 'kinda sucked that when I was a D&D moderator I seemed to be fired for no apparent reason o_o.

I know I'll never get the chance to moderate it, because if the way I say things, and how I word things.

But some of us "older" dedicated members would be the ones you need to look at, because I (being one of them) suggested these changes in the first place.. so obviously the ones like me have a clue about what's going on.. and what needs done to make it a good section again.

ReviewDude is a great guy, and I see he's the trialist, but why him? I thought we were specializing a bit?

He's not been active in that section in a good long while, and being a good moderator doesn't mean you know the section that you're going to moderate.

To fix this section, you need moderators who know the section the best, and the ones who know how to fix it.

There's an implicit issue there that forum users believe that users of that specific forum should be moderators because they know how they want it moderated. There's an issue there first of all with "How they want it moderated." For example, some D&D users (not necessarily you but in some PM conversations this has been said) feel that those who are "idiotic" and not tech savvy with bad ideas should be allowed to be flamed a little bit when they do stupid things or say stupid things. That is not how we want the Forum to be moderated.

The second issue it brings up is that the moderator has to be a user of the forum, and this just backfires in 20 different ways. Usually the moderator's friends are among users of that forum which messes things up for the mod who may either try to be lenient on friends or lose friends when they do things. Also there are certain expectations and there's feelings of betrayal all around when things don't go exactly as the members want them to.

Thus its usually a bad idea to hire a dedicated member, though there are at times cases where we have extraordinary individuals who can handle this. What we try to find is a medium, people who know what the section is about but perhaps aren't aggressively involved in discussions there. For example, ReviewDude is certainly a very competent moderator and I'm sure he'll do a great job.
