Seriously though, that is one hell of a dent. Something the size of earth? Scary, really, when you think about it.

Thats Jupiters job afterall, to pull in dangerous objects away from the other planets due to its immense gravitational pull.

and thank god we have it too

I can't imagine it was very large if something hit Jupiter, I would assume astrologists would of seen a comet/asteroid coming years before, maybe something small and unnoticeable or just something weird on the planet happened, who knows.
-
lol a baseball could do huge damage if it came from space
-
i would guess it to be that large because what ever hit it / happened has egnited the atmosphere their for making a huge flame, or their has been some wierd atmosphere activity like lightning which has egnited it. seeing as jupiter is a ball of gas.
-
Weird. That could be anything... :o
-
Ah, is that why it went dark and the ground shook a few hours ago? :P:P

It's more the fact it has created a large 'scar' on a humongous planet, whatever 'it' is, rather than how big it was.
-
Aliens tbh, what else could it be!?
but urm thats pretty spectacular if thats what a meteor has managed to do. could effect Jupiter potentially if theres any radioactive particles in the rock which hit it.
-
what would radioactive particles do to a ball of gas? It isn't living and going to suddenly sprout eyes and arms.

Jupiter isnt a big ball of gas?, and I said the above because a small meteor hit Mexico and its radiation caused harm to some of the surrounding area, infertile land, unstable surfaces etc. imagine that but the size of thing reported to hit the planet.

Jupiter is a large mass of gas, if it gained around 3000 more mass it would burn itself up and become a sun -.-
-
lol just wiki'd it and said it was a gas giant so i conceed. i dont get the difference between whats deemed as a gas planet and a rock planet if such a thing exists?
-
a planet is just a mass of particles that have came together and orbit the sun, comets are basically loose parts that orbit the sun and are to small to class as a planet.

One is made from gas and the other is made from rock.
Obviously it was the North Koreans launching a missile containing swine flu

That is a big scar, well done to the amateur astronomer!

-
Owow, that could have abliterated us :(

Could happen at any time and Bruce Willis won't always be around to save us

what's that in the sky?
is it a bird, is it a plane?
-
Size of the earth. Deary me.
