    Thats Jupiters job afterall, to pull in dangerous objects away from the other planets due to its immense gravitational pull.

    I can't imagine it was very large if something hit Jupiter, I would assume astrologists would of seen a comet/asteroid coming years before, maybe something small and unnoticeable or just something weird on the planet happened, who knows.

    i would guess it to be that large because what ever hit it / happened has egnited the atmosphere their for making a huge flame, or their has been some wierd atmosphere activity like lightning which has egnited it. seeing as jupiter is a ball of gas.
