Once again, we've got a new account spamming the forums, just as we've had many times this year. Why is post approval turned off? I've asked this a number of times already, but in the casual thread - so here's a proper thread hoping we get an answer.
this very very rarely happens but it would be nice if of all the moderators we had that at least one would be online to deal with it
My favourite part is every time this happens, it seems that anyone that is online to deal with it, is always AFK.
to be fair nick is probably in bed and phil is irish

Well, Wispur has finally closed HxF. Nick just loaded up the main page 10 minutes ago.

My favourite part is that Phil picked this thread over the 10 or so repeat threads that would be shown below this (assuming he views the forum via New Posts/Activity stream - surely no sane person browses the forum through the main page).
Post Approval is currently turned off because we don't think it's a necessity to have it at the moment. The main reason that's even in place is to stop Spambots. Even if a user wants to come on and spam the forum it's pretty easy for them to get past the post approval system as only one post needs to be approved so effectively all they need is one good post.

Well, considering we've had numerous incidents in the last few months, I'd say that post approval does need to be on. Worth noting that all the incidents we've had are all new accounts, so even though they're not bots, they would have been stopped. (And presumably, they would have been banned when you got round to approving the posts, you would've seen that they joined to just spam).Quote:

Whilst that's true, there's bound to be someone online who could deal with any incident of a new member spamming and it doesn't appear to happen that often anyway. If it became a daily thing then yeah, I'd suggest post approval :P.Quote:

A few incidents over the past few months isn't a big issue. We used to get spambots and stuff like this most days of the week so Post Approval certainly isn't as necessary as it was previously.Quote:

Just for discussion though, what are the negatives of post approval? The only one I can think of is the delay in approving posts for genuine users. (Which I imagine could be a lengthy delay considering some of the delays I get on my post reports at times).
That's the only negative as far as I'm aware. I actually didn't turn it off, Matt did so maybe he has another reason for doing so.Quote:

It was turned off because the amount of spambots reduced for a brief time. If it's becoming an issue again then it can be turned back on, all Phil has to do is flick the switch.
Had people over for dinner and I come into my room to put my phone on charge and reloaded hxf then left haha.
It's very confusing for new members to be honest. Plus the wait on posts being approved doesn't help the situation really. Hence why it's off and the amount of spam bots has been reduced drastically due to the other measures that we have put in place. Apart from the odd couple that can bypass the system but that's predictable.
Yeah that was pretty bad but also quite rare, there's USUALLY a mod or admin online. Also I wasn't learning to mod, I did used to be one! Just learning to ban :pQuote:
