well depends what bonuses you want... full range bonus 40 def full magic bonus (mystic) 20 def and so on i have a hybrid and he has 20 def for mystic/initiate which to me helped alot but simply here is what i say

20 def: my personal favourite
1 def: second favourite
45 def: not particuly helpful for range/mage in my opinion
30 def:pointless
50 def: even more
60 def: meh

Else when your using range you wont be able to wear mystic to increase mage bonuses.

Erm depends on mage/range level tbh, and if you want a staker.

Defence is fairly good for pking (tank pure).
