Rites of Spring didn't 'invent' it. They were just one of the first to be recognised to be doing something different. The ability to give an emotional performance on stage was not a rare one, so I'm sure a lot of other bands had the same act going for them. It'd be very naive to be giving Rites of Spring all the credit.
"Emo" itself isn't short for "emotional," and Rites of Spring were the first band to play hardcore punk that style, so yuh, they did invent it. Although I suppose it would be wiser to say that Dischord Records invented it through its hard work pressing the albums, but if you're looking for a band to credit you can't miss out RoS.

I'm aware of the beginnings of emo, thanks.

The idea that one band out of millions did something first is ridiculous, though. They may've been the frst to get recognised for such a new style but there's no way they started off the entire thing.

Especially since the emo band Gray Matter were formed one year before Rites of Spring. Gray Matter were also part of the handful pioneering the emo scene in Washington DC.

As do I, thanks. It's like saying that argueably punk itself actually started in the 50s when garage bands got a leeetle more aggressive. Gray Matter were more of a forerunner of a term that was blueprinted by Rites of Spring.

Also, are you so ignorant you don't pay attention to what most posts say? As I said previously, how am I a 'stupid little child', you have failed to explain that yet. I'm not stupid, nor a child.

And yes, the comment was pretty stupid, because I didn't put the text 'in my opinion', which I should of done and which I have already said. Stop being ignorant.

    Oh, and aha - I don't fail.
You can't even spell believe correctly so how am I meant to believe you are more intelligent than me? Are you going to get an A* in any of your GCSEs? Probably not, though you'll make it up, and I did. You are a stupid little child because I enjoy calling you that name because it seems to wind you up. Even if you did put 'in my opinion' after it then it'd still be a false and stupid statement to say. Everyone is saying how wrong you are but you can't admit it. People like you make me laugh. Enjoy Habbo

It's understandable to say that they made the genre famous, leading to more bands pitching in. I can agree with that, but to say they invented it is another thing altogether.

PERFECT. You do not need a melody to have music do you. A lot of Salsa dance music is just percussion, but it's still music.
