He's been doing 3D for a long while. When I done it, the best I made was a 2 cubes on top of each other and gave up!

Hmm, I'd suggest if you want to get started, you get on www.maxon.net and get the trial. Its unlimited time and the only thing you cant do (apart from have the modules) is save your final model as a model file. Just print screen your works untill you see if you want to buy it £200+ or not. Otherwise search for other free 3D programs.
