So.. my TEACHER was TELLING the story.

"There was my friend (Bernie)"
The story starts out with "There was MY FRIEND"

Picture someone standing at the front of the classroom saying MY FRIEND BERNIE GOT HIT IN THE HEAD WITH AN AXE

It didn't happen to him, it happened to his friend.
