Okay, i'll set y'all straight.
1) Vatsim is an online Virtual Air Traffic server(s). There are a number of servers for different parts of the world that you can connect to and real people play the part of ATC and pilots. It's as real as simulated ATC will ever get in FS.
2) Yes it is. It is so awquard fiddling around with the keyboard to fly in FS. Once you get it, you'll know what I mean.Deffinatly get a joystick to start off with then maybe think about a yoke especially if you want to be an airline pilot, you'll need to handle the heavies well. ;]
3) It's down to personal preference. I currently use a yoke, but my old joystick which I used to use (and still do every now and then) is a Saitek ST90. Few recommendations:
Saitek
4) Yes, using something like VATSIM. If you have access to a decent server, you can use that. VATSIM and IVAO are recomended if you want to do it like 'the pros'. But make sure to read up on operations etc beforehand.
5) If you have a very modern PC with dual-core processor and a very modern graphics card, go for FSX.
However, I would recommend FS9. It will work on virtually all systems nowadays and there are thousands of add-ons for it. So in my opinion, go for FS9/FS 2004.
Hope that helped.
