Very very very very rarely you will see a VFR aircraft above 3000ft, but not during a flying lesson.

If you want scary, fly over a tornado at FL350 in a 767-300.... Thats what you call scary

Danny & I had the most unfortunate experience of flying so low we ran straight into a 23ft wave at Hawaii, back in '98. Don't worry though we rescued all passengers & eventually got the plane out of there after a few hours.
