Sit them down and talk to them, try and find out what the problem is that's making them want to do it to themself because if they carry on doing it, it'll be an addicition that they'll need to carry on doing so that they feel better, as I've been there before.

If you struggle to help them, or they can't talk to you. Get them to talk to a parent, or maybe even someone at school/college that might be able to help with their problems. There is also loads of alternatives that they could try to take their mind off actually self harming, the thread is on another forum but they are still pretty good. There is also some distraction as well as alternatives

Take the person to the mental hostal. They will take good care of your friend and that will take a heavy load off your sholders knowing they are in a safe place.
