Actually, the top refers to your top, your hair while the carrot refers to the colour. Tis a mis-conception thinking otherwise.

I find the insults funny, because they're so petty and they take it so seriously, but I don't see why people dislike ginger people...

The thing that gets me is people saying "Ginger people", we're not ginger people, we have ginger hair. That's like calling someone with black hair, black. Before you say "Yeah but blonde haired people are called blonde, and brunette haired people are called brunette.". Technically those terms are for hair colours, not colours in general. Where as the word ginger means an actual colour.
