Always been like that, for years.
Free texts (ie o2 genie, whatever else) don't work for that. Just something to do with it being a premium rate text, not to an o2/T-mobile/Orange etc phone.
Doubt everything, even this.

That happened with habbo creds to me once, i got so annoyed I sent 3 texts and have up. Then when i topped up my phone KABLAM the texts came through and I lost my tenner

yah thats happened before and was well annoyed
altough i done it before for 1 code and sent twice and got 2 codes for £3
