    to sex the gerbil, gently press the lower chest. if it's male, you will see the penis. i know you said you can't pick them up, but it's either that or wait a while until you've got a baby gerbil.

    if it is male, consider separating the male from the females. furthermore, are the gerbils young?

    i'm not quite sure myself. try checking the gerbil in which you suspect is a male again. if you still can't get hold of it, you could take it to the vet or just wait and see if she does give birth.
