After viewing the traffic my flickr photo stream was getting from this site, I thought I'd follow the referral link to figure out what gives.
Imagine my surprise when I found a whole thread about our wedding on here!
Even more surprising was the variety of responses on the thread- from the supporters to the "sassdddds". I really couldn't believe that we had sparked even this much commentary.
In the interest of fostering online community, I thought I come in here and give some background.
Back in the early part of 2001, Sulake had just launched their first English language Habbo server. As a Web application developer and owner of my own business, I was always trying out new interactive applications online- especially those in the then-fledgling social networking genre.
Habbo wasn't quite a game, wasn't quite a full chat room, but was something inbetween, presented with a cute pixel presentation.
I went in one night with some developer friends when one had started up a conversation with my future wife. Turns out we were both developers and content producers interested in the same interactive environments.
Back then, Habbo was a pretty quiet place. It was mostly designers and Web mavens trying out something new; not the pre-teen Mecca it has become today.
After a couple of hours, we ended up talking in the cafe one on one. The following night, we actually began communicating through MSN. After that, many e-mails and then many more phone calls. A year later, she moved to Vancouver, Canada from Anchorage, Alaska so we could be together.
In 2007, we were married.
I'll be honest: I don't think we once went back to Habbo together after that first night. We had each checked it out over the years individually to catch all the amazing developments and wonder at its popularity. Over the last few years, we've mostly played WoW online >grin<.
So why the Habbo hotel theme? We love pixel art. We're old enough to remember when those blocky bits were the standard in computer animated expression. We were married in Toronto's Drake Hotel, a very cool boutique venue with a vibrant music and art focus.
I haven't posted any photos from our wedding yet. I had a bit of digital photo crisis that's taken me some months to get over (read: I lost a ton). I'm looking forward to doing so you guys can see that Habbo and its imagery was used as starting point for our theme; a representation of some of our interests in interactive experiences and retro computer art.
As my wife and I are avid Flickr-ites, we used Moo cards to tell the story, as well, to show a narrative using Habbo assets. My background as a graphic designer came into play as I assembled these images from screenshots, as well as crafted my own pixel structures and elements to match the decor of the Drake.
Rest assured Habbo commentators, I didn't wear a plastic Fisherprice-esque hairpiece for our Big Day. Nor did we dance repetitive with canned animation. And while our animator friend produced that amazing cake-topper you see from our Habbo-selves, I assure you the cupcakes we indulged in were very real.
All in all, it was a fabulous event with tremendous warmth from friends and family.
So, hopefully this explains the inspiration for our wedding imagery and why we did it. Maybe this will give you some ideas for how to find inspiration for your own wedding day. At the very least, maybe we'll see a bit more activity on this thread!![]()
It's happened a load of times on secondlife, you have to think though secondlife is used by people 18-60 odd.
second life also has real life business where as habbo is a basic chat room used by teens so the likeliness of marriage is really low.
@above, I really like the idea behind the wedding n_n
and it seemed to work well and I hope you both enjoy many years of marriage
By any chance did you have this tie?
