VM use BT wholesale packages at exchanges where FTTC is not available.I will pay £10 if you can find anywhere it says that you are guarenteed 8mb - 10mb all of the time. Also, VM have never done a 8mb cable package and are updating 4mb > 10mb.
EDIT: VM also don't use BT Exchanges, they are FTTC (Fibre To the CURB). Co-Axel for the last bit before anyone comes along and tries to argue they are FTTH (Fibre To the Home).
I always reccomend BT.
Things are put straight forward, you get the support you need, a free homehub and hubphone, and now the BTtoGo. For £30 a month, its good.
BT is the worst imo.
