open the lift roof hatch and climb up the falling cable and if possible grab a cable that isn't falling with the lift. then theres just a long way down to climb...

It all depends on how fast its going and how many floors. If theres enough time, try and climb to the top of the lift and open the roof
Wouldn't do it in time though.

Lets make the story cheesy.

The lift is going to fast upwards, it breaks through the roof and then your falling to the ground in a box with nothing around you apart from air.

But whats the possibility of:
Lift going out of control
Breaks failing
