Dude, some people happen to like certain stories? If they want to see how well they write angst or horror or anything like that, they can! A lot of authors write about things they've never experienced. Although they may not make the best stories, they are still good! You don't have to be thinking about something to write about it.

That last sentence is absolutely stupid. How could you not be thinking about something but know what to write? Where would the thoughts about it be if they weren't in your head to think of them?
That line meant: He thinks about something in the sense of writing a story, not in the sense of it being real life.
You read something, like the style and test it out. I don't know if that's what happened, but it CAN.
