aren't they meant to prove you're guilty rather than the other way round. or is that just in court?

I got arrested for accidentally smashing a school window

it was years ago all I remember is I had a brick my hand and threw it and somehow it hit a school window and there was this policewoman walking her dog and she just walked up to me and pulled out her badge lol.
