Us normal users only have 5 messages to store.
I think this should be increased or is it because I'm new and the ranks?

It's because your new. The higher the ranks, the more PM space

I have quite a lot of PM space
As you move up in rank, you get more privilege.

Get yourself up to Admin status, you get a comfortable 10,000 PM storage space.

the more post counts you get = the higher your rank = the higher your inbox

yeah you rise with your ranks and also you can only keep important ones

You shouldn't have 5? unless ive missed something
Bronze and silver members get 200
Gold and ruby get 300
Platinum get 400
VIPs get 600.
