I built my own and it cost me around $950-1000. So approximately £425-500.
I would recommend buying parts instead of buying from Dell, because they tend to have much slower machines, smaller memory, the graphics cards are horrible.

Also you can essentially customize to specifications. Like for me, I'm a gamer so I made sure I had a very nice graphics card, a 19" monitor to save some cash (About £100) instead of buying the 20" or 21"...besides the fact that the screen looked watered down with a bigger screen. The memory is also a huge factor. I have a massive music library and it's only putting a dent right now into the entire thing, lol.

    Find out what you require:
    -Memory
-Monitor Size (Do you REALLY need a 20"-21", save some £/$$)
-Graphics Card (Can't stress this enough)
-Does the machine need extra cooling? Might need to consider installing fans.

    That's all for now.

    Thanks for those tips.

Memory I'm hoping to get 3gb or 4gb. The monitor, I have a 21 inch one in the garage which hasn't been used for a while. Graphics card I need to find out which are decent nowadays - I've seen threads say the 8800 is a decent one for gaming, don't know about fans but more the merrier I guess.

    Thanks +Rep

8800GT is outdated really now, 9800GTX or something is the way to go.

I thought that also. But I heard from people's experience it's just really good.

If people have custom built PCs, if you have time to do so, could you list what parts you bought then I'll have the general idea of what to get.

It is, but the 9800GTX is obviously the next one up, buying one of those now will make your computer pretty future proof if you plan on playing all the latest releases.

the GTX280 is futureproof, or the ATI 4700x2 or whatever it is.
