I highly recommend Death Note, Read or Die (OVA), Sword of the Stranger, Trigun, Utawarerumono, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tekkonkinkreet and Afro Samurai. They're all brilliant to start with.

I also highly recommend Kaiji and Welcome to the NHK if you want to watch a more serious anime series.

Tell me what genre you're into and I'm sure I could recommend you some anime's fitting to that genre.

Oh yeah I should've said. I like anything, it doesn't really matter. It's the quality of storyline, rather than themes.

Just name a load of good ones and I'll look into them.

Then definitely check out (in order)
    Death Note
    Read or Die
    Sword of the Stranger
    Utawarerumono
    Welcome to the NHK
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
    Kaiji and
    Ghost in the Shell

    A nice mix there.
