I had this problem, I had to download new .net framework 3.0

If you already have it try removing it and downloading it again, was a fault with mine somewhere, coincidence your using a compaq too, mines nothing but annoying with installing things after re-formatting

I get the same problem every time I perform a format, what I do is re-download the installer and install again, if it doesn't work still, just get the new beta from: http://www.filehippo.com/download_msn_messenger

Although it is apparently solved, I'd offer my experience with this type of problem.

A WLM installation failed/cancelled for whatever reason, and left over some files inside a temp folder (Local Settings/App Data iirc). For some reason, unless I deleted them, it would always fail.

Second time this plague occured, I had to install every single Windows Update. So go figure.
