    You sound on a budget!

TBH if you want something half decent but that's not too bad to run, definitely go diesel. Also, don't worry about the price of the car, your biggest cost will be insurance.

You can get a decently fast car eg. Peugeot 306 D-Turbo which is in insurance group 5 but does 0-60 in 9 seconds and pay the same for insurance as you would for a crappy rover metro which would NEVER get to 60mph!

Definitely look at insurance prices ahead of anything else. www.parkers.co.uk/insurance is great for that. Anything below insurance group 5 will be reasonable in terms of insurance price.

SMALL CARS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE STOLEN AND COST MORE IN INSURANCE! Also, you look like a girl in them, go for something manly!

If you're only going to be driving yourself around most of the time then consider a van. You can get a CDV (car derived van) which is IDENTICAL to a car to drive and you will pay less than half the cost in insurance. Check out an Astra Van (post-1999 see picture) you can get a decent one for about 2 grand and it'll do 65 MPG and easily outrun any Vauxhall Corsa. A van will also be ultra reliable.

If a van isnt appealing, try a Skoda Fabia. Insurance group 2 for a 1.9 turbo diesel is stonking value and even the vR6 sport edition one is below group 10!

Renault Megane - (5 door) insurance group 5 isn't bad for the price and they are dirt cheap to buy. It'll probably cost you in parts and servicing though.

The group rating is based on the fastness of the car ie. the likelyhood of you crashing it. The cost of parts in case of insurance-paid repair. The chance of it being stolen and several other factors.

The differences vary between insurers but if you were paying £1000 for a group 2 car (corsa/fabia etc) then expect to pay £2000+ for a group 5+ car.

Basically yeah. Your insurance also goes on things like your occupation, your postcode, gender and age. (Those last two i hate).

Your best sticking to a Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Fiesta. Peugeots are terrible cars and and Saxo's have a terrible Ncap rating.
