Tsunami Warning

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in the South Pacific.


The quake occured about 130 miles southeast of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, the US National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
"It is not known that a tsunami was generated," the centre said.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami."

On BBC News now:

The island state of Tonga is a developing tourist destination.
US monitors advised that some coastal areas of Hawaii could see a rise in sea level and strong currents lasting up to several hours but said no destructive impact was expected.
There were no immediate indications of any damage or casualties on Tonga's main island, Tongan police said in the capital, Nuku'alofa.
