Indeed it is both, the nforce 680i is the name of the chipset and the mobo.
    http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=+nForce+680i&hl=en

Obviously there are different company's which brand the mobo, but thats just branding.
I see where your coming at though N!ck, like the P5Q Deluxe is the motherboard and the chipset is the Intel P45. But nVidia Always name there chipsets and the mobo together.

I was quite happy actually, when my Gigabyte board died I was talking to Novatech and they strongly advised me against the 680i based motherboards, which actually was £30 more expensive than the P5K I bought from them.

No it's not. ASUS, XFX and EVGA are all manufactures of motherboards on that list. They made the board themselves and used a 680i chipset on it. It's the same with Intel and nVidia, they make the chipset that goes on the boards make by another manufacturer (Intel do make a couple of their own boards, but they don't just call it after the chipset, they have proper model numbers).
