    Default GSM Cracked

It's a bit late however it is interesting

Spend $500 on a bit of radio hardware, plug it into your laptop and you too can play spooks and listen in to someone’s mobile phone call.

Incase anybody doesn't know, GSM is the method by which our mobile phones work (The US use another type but I wouldn't worry about that). The encryption can now be cracked... sort of

    Scary stuff really.

You mean CDMA? We use that in Canada too. It sucks In both Canada and USA there are GSM carriers and CDMA carriers.

Hmm, interesting. Although anything CAN be cracked, how many people actually do it and how likely you it is to happen to you is a different story.

And yeah the CDMA/GSM thing sounds sucky, even if you unlock your phone you're stuck choosing networks that uses the same technology aren't you? I know there are 4 main carriers in the US, AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM and Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, so by unlocking your phone you get to choose... the other network. Sounds crap!

Couldn't suck more in Canada, where most carriers are ripoffs anyway. I can't just take out a sim card from my phone and stick it into another phone, because we don't use sim cards on CDMA networks. Unfortunately when I'm locked into a 3 year phone contract, I HAVE to use that phone for 3 years. You have to buy your phone from the carrier, too. They wont activate a phone with an ESN that they didn't sell.

Actually what's the point of this thread? It's like saying, "Users can now get phones with real web browsers". Ooooold ooold news

3 years?! Wow... I don't know how the carriers can do that with a straight face! Phone technology moves so fast, in 3 years your phone becomes far outdated, especially if you're a nerd who likes the latest gadgets and stuff. 3 years ago the iPhone was a glint in the milkman's eye and we still thought cameras on phones were a pretty nifty idea!

Nah, it wasn't. Pretty much exactly 3 years from now the K800i (which I got and still have) came out which was the top end phone at the time with a 3.2MP camera.
