Split Ends?

Probably a silly question but I've never really understood why split ends are a problem? Isn't a split end just the hair splitting into two strands instead of one? If that is the case why is it such a big problem, serious question.

Because they make your hair look frizzy and thin like a broom. They break off if the split end travels down to the follicle.

I just get my thumb and index finger nails and run it down each strand that has split ends, then they just drop off

it's probably bad for your hair. but ah well
