    Default Targetting Audiences.

    well looking at my lecturers slide show i saw this

    Creating an Audience

    Publicity and marketing
    Posters
    Print advertisements
    Trailers
    Promotional interviews (chat shows etc)
    Tie ins campaigns (McDonalds, clothing)
    Merchandising (t shirts, hats, key rings)
    in my own eyes i don't see that as creating an audience i see that as promotion and targetting the audiences you already know of.

    Because it says tie ins campaigns macdonalds, macdonalds targets kids with most of its film promotions so they must already know their audience is kids?

    The marketing side comes way after deciding on the audience of a film. Most companies just buy screenplays or option pitches already knowing the audience after reading, as it's common sense when you're in the industry, then it goes from there into planning and pre-production, production, then marketing when distribution is sorted.

    wouldn't marketting come before distribution so people recognize it? and what are option pitches / screen plays in marketting

    The bulk of the marketing comes with the process of distribution.

    Pitches are quite simply when people make a story pitch to executives. A screenplay is the more formal term for a film script, and an option is when a company buys the script from the writer(s) in an agreement that they may produce it, but they may also not. Typically, optioned screenplays sit on the shelf and collect dust for a few years before being produced.

    o So the pitch is like "i have a great film - shows script / briefs of it etc" then they can say nah i dislike it or i love it. And screenplay they would they purchase the script then see if there is an audience for it, or show the book to an audience then purchase it?

    and by the bulk of marketting does comes with distribution does that mean sales will increase in like batman t-shirts when the film is actually distributed.

    Writers usually pitch their story to executives without having a script. They simply pitch the story to the company and then they usually include themselves as the people who would write the script if the company decide to purchase the rights.

    Companies will only ever purchase a screenplay if they feel there is an audience. No audience = no money - after all, this industry is a business.

    dayum this is one wierd assignment as much as you help and as much as i find nothing much really helps towards it, but im asking the right questions LOL.

    these are all the main questions im asking myself for it:


    Why is it important for producers to understand there audience in relation of there product?

    How do they target the audience?

    Do they target their audience before or after film is produced?

    Do the majourity of producers produce one type of genre mainly?

    How are films marketted?

    Why do they market and promote some films more than others?

    Does marketting and promotion always make a succesful film?

    How is a film marketted to target the specific audience?

    i'll add: How would you target an audience with a specific market.
