Treatment of newer members?

Right my friend from Habbo sometimes comes on this forum. She doesn't use it actively and doesn't fully understand the rules. She uses other official forums and she uses the forum from Habbo itself, which is moderated but not as half as strict as this. I imagine a lot of users who are new here are in the same position.

Anyway, I have no doubt that moderators are told to be more lenient on newer members and move their threads and just give them user notes, rather than punishments. It's confusing when you're new. I know the rules inside out (no comment please ;l) and sometimes, I genuinely fall foul of them due to an error on my behalf. Like I said to someone something like "you off the DNHL yet?" and of course that's leaking personal info, you don't think that when you're chatting.

ANYWAYS, I keep going off topic. Basically, although you might think and say you are more lenient to newer members I think you should send them much nicer PMs for usernotes and don't warn/infract them, unless they've signed up to cause trouble, then it's different. For example, a PM could be like:

Hey there,

Just a friendly heads up Recently you posted the term (close ya eyes here) FML in a thread. We prefer users not to do this on Habbox due to one of the letters being an abbreviation for a filtered word.

Don't worry about this, thought I best let you know

These words aren't filtered on here or other places. How are they supposed to know? We have a user retention issue, I genuinely think they're put off by heavy handed moderation. I know the user in question was and no longer wants to use the forum because she feels like she's being punished when she isn't intentionally breaking rules. I'm sure you'll agree so it'd be good if you could try and be more lenient and friendly to newer members.

I thought this was going to be about the Welcome forum and I was going to admit I still never really post there cos it feels too spammy and fake but never mind lol.

Obviously I don't know how moderators treat new users but I don't see how anyone could disagree that the matter should be approached in as friendly a manner as possible. Retaining members is an ongoing discussion that takes place in this very section and it needs to be tackled from the top, which is the moderators.

PMs should be like that, whenever you get a PM on here it's like being messaged by an automatic messaging system or 'bot :/ They're quite anti-social, and lack any personal approach. Formalities should be kept to formal environments, not a fansite forum

That PM doesn't really look heavy handed to me tbh, I think your friend is overreacting. Yes it is true that some of our rules are slightly ridiculous but I wouldn't say that was heavy handed moderation.

Edit: oh looks like I completely misread something, yes PMs should be like that. Are they not atm? If not, moderation team should use their common sense and realise that newbie members may not have read the rules thoroughly, I certainly didn't

Noooo Mike! The PM is what they should be the like, the PMs that are actually sent are like Ryan said, horrible. Although, I don't care for them, they would certainly intimidate new members who probably don't even understand exactly what they've done wrong half the time.

I can't honestly say that many PMs regarding rules come across as rude or aggressive, and in any case from what I've seen you do get a verbal warning first usually, rather than going straight to warnings and infractions.

I recently edited a post you made (see below) as it was deemed to be pointless. In the Post a Picture of Yourself.. thread it is against the rules to post pointlessly or start a spam conversation. Repeated breaking of this rule is likely to result in a warning or an infraction. This is just a reminder.

Seems friendly enough to me. Took out the name of the one who issued it in case they'd rather not have that up, and I'm sure in this case it's fine to post the PM because it's for a purpose and it's only to do with my own activity anyway, but apologies if not.

New users are PM'd in very friendly manners by our moderators when they break rules, not only do we explain the rule, we explain how they broke it and provide them relevant links to read up on the rules.

If a member then ignores this moderator advice on serveral occasions, they will recieve warnings and infractions.

The member you are referring to recieved several polite PM's from moderators (I know this as I have the usernotes on a different tab right now).

On these occasions it was explained to her that Habbox does not allow swearing in the form of "*****" etc.

For that member to then break the rule again, following being contacted several times, naturally (as with any other member) they go down the warning > infraction route.

Sammeth recently made it clear be stands by "*****" etc being filtered and this is the way it's going to stay, avoiding the filter is avoiding the filter.

On a lighter note, "FML" is now permitted for use around the forums.

I don't really see you concern here Jake, as this member was PM'd politely, twice, by two different moderators asking her not to avoid the filter.

There's only so many chances we can give.

I see where you are coming from. Newer members who break the rules shouldn't get as harsh punishments from the start, although normally they only get a usernote and PM if they are that new. But this obviously depends on the rules, because some members just sign up to cause trouble on the forums no matter what.

I agree that the Moderation Department should all start sending out friendlier PMs to users so it doesn't make it look too "automated", It's always nice to put a nice personal touch it. I mean, we would all complain if we was in a store and they all looked depressed. But anyway, I know a few Moderators already do this, but I shall make it all aware to them.
