1. The European 'Old World' ended with the meeting of East and West at the city of Constantinople (Istanbul). Turkey is still fundamentally classified as the beginning of the Middle East, if we were to use modern ideas of 'Europe' then some would dispute the inclusion of Northern Africa and East Russia (beyond the Ural mountains) which is ridiculous.
2. Turkey may be making economic measures to become a member of the EU, but as yet its status still remains as an associate member. Although it was influential in many coalitions in the latter 20th century, namely OECD and OSCE, it still has a long way to go economically, politically and socially before it can hope to become a member of the EU.
