Although he is a great player and captain, i agree with the people saying its much more than what happens on the pitch, and therefore he should resign.

Hmm. I don't think that he should be captain yet. I'm not saying he'd be a bad captain, but there are players ahead of him that have been captain for there clubs for a while. Also, the exact reason why SAF didn't put him as captain today, let him play as a striker, don't weigh him down with being captain too.
