ah then this should be easy
1 - copy windows7.iso or whatever the file name is for the setup for OS onto SD Card (although if its only 1gb i'd suggest windows xp because windows 7 ultimate takes up 3.4GB)
2 - Put SD card into laptop and simply open the ISO in WinRar and run Setup.exe - Do NOT take out the SD card until you first see the login screen

Now, if this doesnt work I suggest going creating a bootable SD Card (google how to do this) and transfer w7 or xp to the SD card and boot from SD card from Bios menu, (press either esc 3 times on start-up or f2 on manufacturers start up screen and select boot diisk priority or something -> SD (or USB depending on Bios Version) it should then install fine.

Wouldn't that just try to boot from the "CD"?

im not entirely familar with SD card setups etc, but I've installed Windows 7 from an external harddrive on an .iso format and the setup.exe ran fine, and also installed windows XP from a USB drive via BIOS and faced no problems there? It must vary on outcome depending on what OS it is?

Windows 7 is easier to get to boot from USB or SD Card than XP, fyi.

I don't know the answer, but get a larger card. Especially when 4Gb and 8Gb cards are so cheap nowadays.
    AMD Phenom X4 955 BE - 8GB RAM - Asus M5A97 - MSI HD6870 HAWK - Windows 8.1 Pro 64 - Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

Windows XP should be fine on a 1GB card, Windows 7 will need over 4GB

I had Windows XP (No service packs) and it took around 500mb installation and I had windows 7 ultimate (no updates either) and that took up around 3.5gb
